A retired Colombian cycling star, Marlon Pérez, was fatally stabbed following a dispute at a bar in Eastern Antioquia, and his attacker, Édison Arley Posada Posada, has been sentenced to 33 years and four months in prison. A Fatal Altercation in El Carmen de Viboral
The events leading to Pérez’s death began at the Café Bar El Cafetal in the municipality of El Carmen de Viboral. According to reports, an argument erupted between Pérez and Posada Posada, reportedly stemming from a disagreement over a woman. Witnesses state that Posada Posada immediately began issuing threats, vowing to kill Pérez, though initial reactions dismissed these as mere boasts.
However, the threats tragically materialized after the pair left the bar and walked towards the Villa de Azón neighborhood. Posada Posada attacked Pérez with a “sharp knife-type weapon,” inflicting a deep eight-centimeter wound to his neck. “After they closed the bar, we walked as if to the side of the tanks, when the uncovering was going to begin, that fag Édison said he was going to kill the victim with the knife,” one witness recounted. Despite immediate efforts by the El Carmen de Viboral Fire Department to transport Pérez to the San Juan de Dios Hospital, doctors were unable to save his life.
From Bar Brawl to Conviction
Following the attack, Posada Posada attempted to evade capture by changing his clothes, but was quickly identified by witnesses and corroborated by security camera footage from the bar and surrounding areas. Authorities apprehended him a week later, on October 13th, in the municipality of Alejandría, Eastern Antioquia, and charged him with aggravated homicide.
After more than a year of legal proceedings, a judge in Rionegro delivered the guilty verdict, citing compelling evidence that established Posada Posada’s responsibility for the murder. This evidence included witness testimonies, security camera recordings, and crucial forensic evidence confirming the fatal neck injury.

Marlon Pérez Arango was more than just an athlete; he was a celebrated figure in Colombian cycling. His most significant achievement came in 2000 with a victory at the Tour Nord-Isère in France. Prior to that, he secured wins at the Vuelta al Valle del Cauca in 1999, and both the Vuelta de la Juventud and Colombia en Ruta sub-23 in 1998.
Throughout his career, Pérez consistently demonstrated his talent, earning seven stage wins in the Vuelta a Colombia, five in the Clásico RCN, and three in the Vuelta al Táchira. He also competed in the prestigious Giro d’Italia in 2004, 2005, and 2008, achieving a 39th-place finish in his best showing in 2004.
