Yoon Seok-yeol’s ‘Gift from God’ Remark Sparks Controversy Amid Rebellion Trial

A recent letter from former South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol, currently detained and on trial for alleged rebellion, praising far-right YouTuber Jeon Han-gil as “a precious gift from God to the Republic of Korea,” has ignited a firestorm of criticism. The revelation, made public by Jeon Han-gil on October 28th, comes as Yoon Seok-yeol faces accusations of attempting to shift blame onto subordinate generals during his trial.
Conflicting Rhetoric and Shifting Responsibility
Conservative commentator Cho Gap-je, CEO of Cho Gap-je.com, was among the first to publicly condemn the former president’s expression of gratitude towards Jeon Han-gil, a figure known for promoting election fraud conspiracy theories. According to Cho, Yoon Seok-yeol also stated in the letter that he prays “every morning and evening to protect my teacher Jeon’s safety and health.”
This sentiment sharply contrasts with the former president’s behavior during courtroom proceedings. On October 20th, while questioning Hong Jang-won, former First Deputy Director of the National Intelligence Service, Yoon Seok-yeol reportedly used derogatory language – including terms like “bastard” – when referring to Yeo Yeo-hyung, the former commander of the ROK Armed Forces Counterintelligence Command. He allegedly protested that he had not issued any instructions, seemingly attempting to distance himself from the actions of his subordinates.
“You tried to arrest (politicians) based on your own judgment?” Hong Jang-won reportedly retorted, directly challenging Yoon Seok-yeol’s claims of non-involvement and accusing him of attempting to shift responsibility.
A Disconnect Between Public Persona and Private Correspondence
The discrepancy between Yoon Seok-yeol’s public and private statements has raised questions about his sincerity and motivations. Cho Gap-je pointedly questioned whether the same individual who penned a letter filled with religious devotion and praise for Jeon Han-gil is the same person who appeared at a debate with the word “King” written on the palm of his hand.
Furthermore, Cho urged Yoon Seok-yeol to demonstrate his faith through action, stating that if his acceptance of God is genuine, he should publicly confess that “there was no election fraud” and seek forgiveness from the nation.
The unfolding situation underscores the complex political landscape surrounding Yoon Seok-yeol’s trial and the deep divisions within South Korean society. The controversy surrounding his letter and courtroom conduct is likely to fuel further debate and scrutiny as the legal proceedings continue.
