Northern Vietnam is experiencing a heatwave, with temperatures reaching 33 degrees Celsius (91 degrees Fahrenheit) in some areas, according to reports from Friday, March 20, 2026. While much of the region is seeing clear skies, residents should prepare for localized showers and thunderstorms later in the day. The unusually warm weather comes as the country continues to grapple with the increasing frequency of extreme weather events linked to climate change.

The heat is particularly pronounced in the northwest of the country, where temperatures are expected to climb as high as 30 to 33 degrees Celsius. Further east, in the northeast, conditions will be generally cloudy with localized rainfall and fog in the early morning, clearing to sunshine in the afternoon. However, mountainous and hilly areas in the northeast are forecast to experience scattered showers and thunderstorms overnight.

Today, the maximum temperature recorded in the North reached 33 degrees Celsius.

Regional Forecasts: From Hanoi to Hue

Hanoi will see cloudy skies with no rain expected in the morning, giving way to sunshine in the afternoon and localized light showers in the evening. Winds will be light, coming from the southeast. Temperatures in the capital will range from a low of 21 to 23 degrees Celsius (70 to 73 degrees Fahrenheit) to a high of 26 to 28 degrees Celsius (79 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit).

From Thanh Hoa to Hue, the forecast calls for generally cloudy conditions with fog and mist in the early morning, followed by sunshine in the afternoon. However, scattered showers and thunderstorms are anticipated in the late afternoon, and evening. A risk of tornadoes, lightning, and strong wind gusts accompanies these storms.

Potential for Severe Weather

The National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting warns of potential risks associated with the approaching storms, particularly in the northwest and northeast regions. Residents are advised to be aware of the possibility of tornadoes, lightning strikes, and strong wind gusts during any thunderstorms. The center as well notes that temperatures in mountainous areas of the northeast could dip below 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) overnight.

The central coastal region will experience cloudy conditions with sunny spells, scattered showers, and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening. Winds will be light, blowing from the northeast to east. The Central Highlands will be cloudy with clearings, scattered showers, and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening, with cooler nights.

Southern Vietnam is expected to be cloudy with sunny days, scattered showers, and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening. Ho Chi Minh City will see cloudy skies with clearings during the day and no rain overnight, with temperatures ranging from 23 to 25 degrees Celsius (73 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit) to a high of 32 to 34 degrees Celsius (90 to 93 degrees Fahrenheit).

Climate Change and Increasing Extreme Weather

These weather patterns arrive amid growing concerns about the impact of climate change on Vietnam. Recent reports indicate an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, including strong storms and unusual rainfall patterns. According to a report from March 18, 2026, Vietnam continues to experience record-breaking storms and unusual rainfall.

Le Cong Thanh, Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, recently highlighted the increasing challenges posed by these events, emphasizing the need for improved forecasting and early warning systems. The country is actively investing in new technologies to better predict and prepare for natural disasters.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the latest weather updates from the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting and to take necessary precautions to protect themselves during periods of severe weather. The next official update from the center is expected on March 21, 2026.
