Jeonju’s Dasibom Center Leads South Korea’s Circular Economy Revolution
Jeonju City is rapidly emerging as a leader in sustainable practices, spearheaded by the innovative work of the Upcycling Center Dasibom. The center’s multifaceted approach to resource management and industry support is attracting national attention and positioning the city at the forefront of South Korea’s circular economy movement.
Pioneering Upcycling Initiatives in Jeonju
Upcycling Center Dasibom announced on November 11th that its efforts over the past year have focused on establishing a central hub for the upcycling industry and nurturing local businesses dedicated to transforming waste into valuable resources. This commitment aims to cultivate a broader culture of resource circulation and contribute to a more sustainable future.
A Multifaceted Approach to Resourcefulness
The center’s core activities encompass a range of initiatives, including comprehensive upcycling education programs, compelling art exhibitions, guided tours of the facility, and crucial industrial support for resident companies. These efforts are designed to engage the community and foster a thriving upcycling ecosystem.
Empowering Through Education and Outreach
Dasibom has prioritized education, utilizing 16 professionally trained instructors to deliver both theoretical and hands-on learning experiences. These programs extend beyond the center’s walls, with on-site educational services offered to schools and organizations seeking to integrate resource circulation principles into their curricula. A key partnership with Jeonju City and the Jeonju Office of Education resulted in 20 field trips for elementary school students, fostering early awareness and encouraging family participation in upcycling practices.
Showcasing Creativity Through Art
The center regularly hosts upcycling-themed art exhibitions, with eight shows held annually – four permanent and four temporary. Currently, the “Conclusive Corner” special exhibition, which opened on October 24th, features upcycled furniture and carbon-based artworks and will remain on display until February 20th of next year.
Supporting Local Upcycling Businesses
Dasibom is actively working to bolster the upcycling industry by providing crucial support to resident companies. Notably, the center facilitated the selection of products from Eat It Co., Ltd. and Uksam Workshop as official merchandise for the 26th Jeonju International Film Festival. Furthermore, the center offers incubation services, including support for promotional booths at external exhibitions, to help these businesses achieve long-term independence.
Fostering Collaboration and Community Engagement
Beyond direct support to businesses, Dasibom actively promotes collaboration within the Seonosong-dong area. Last September, the center co-hosted the Seonosong Art Week with local citizens, residents, and artists, transforming an unexpected space into a vibrant showcase of upcycled creations and providing valuable sales opportunities for resident companies. The center’s on-site upcycling store further promotes and sells products from these businesses, expanding their reach and driving industry growth by connecting ready-made items with customized production requests.
A Model for Sustainable Innovation
Celebrating its fourth anniversary this year, the Jeonju City Upcycling Center Dasibom is strategically located in the Seonosong Art Village. The facility features a retail store on the first floor, dedicated laboratory and co-working spaces for resident companies on the second, and exhibition and educational spaces on the third and fourth floors. Guided tours are available for groups by reservation.
The center’s success has garnered national recognition, attracting 30 representatives from organizations in Sejong City and Busan Metropolitan City this year to benchmark its facility design and operational strategies. “The key to upcycling is to add design and value to discarded waste to regenerate it into new objects and use them usefully in everyday life,” stated a senior official from Jeonju City’s Resource Circulation and Greenery Bureau. “I hope that citizens will join us in creating a sustainable circular economy society in Jeonju by practicing resource circulation through upcycling.”
The Jeonju City Upcycling Center is currently operated by People & Environment Co., Ltd., and a recent decision by a private consignment selection committee has extended their operational contract for two years, through 2027, solidifying the center’s role as a cornerstone of Jeonju’s sustainability efforts.
