BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Recent Hampshire gymnastics team will be well-represented at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional Championship this Thursday, April 2nd, as sophomore Mady Harvey, junior captain McCall McMullen, and senior Serena Mullin have all earned individual bids to compete. The competition, hosted by Louisiana State University, will be streamed live on ESPN+ at 2 p.m. Eastern Time. This marks a significant achievement for the UNH program, showcasing the talent and dedication of these three gymnasts on a national stage.

The Wildcats’ contingent will be part of a challenging regional field that includes No. 2 LSU, No. 7 Stanford, No. 10 Michigan, No. 15 Clemson, Auburn, North Carolina, Utah State, and Air Force. The NCAA announced the field on Monday, selecting the top 36 teams, 12 all-around competitors, and 16 event specialists based on their National Qualifying Scores (NQS). The announcement was broadcast live on ESPNU, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting competition.

Harvey, McMullen, and Mullin will compete in Session I of the regional championship, held at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Mullin, competing in the all-around, will rotate alongside the Michigan team, moving through beam, floor, vault, and bars. McMullen, a floor exercise specialist, will perform following the Utah State routine in the first rotation. Harvey, specializing on the balance beam, will follow Utah State in the fourth rotation. More information about the Baton Rouge Regional can be found on the LSU Sports website.

A Beam of Success: Mady Harvey’s Rise

Sophomore Mady Harvey has quickly become a standout performer for the Wildcats, particularly on the balance beam. She is ranked 65th nationally and sixth in the Northeast with a beam NQS of 9.875, a score she matched at the EAGL Championship held at LIU’s Pratt Recreation Center on Saturday. Harvey’s consistency has been remarkable, topping the beam podium an impressive nine times in UNH’s 12 regular season meets. She added another podium finish with a third-place tie at North Carolina State on February 27th.

Harvey’s personal best score of 9.925, achieved against Air Force, Iowa State, and Bridgeport on January 18th, demonstrates her potential for even higher scores. Her recent EAGL beam championship was the first outright title for a Wildcat since Kayla Gray in 2013, highlighting the significance of her achievement. The sophomore’s dedication and precision have made her a key contributor to the UNH gymnastics team.

Floor Exercise Power: McCall McMullen’s Dynamic Routines

Junior captain McCall McMullen has consistently delivered strong performances on the floor exercise, earning her a spot as an individual specialist at the regional championship. She tied for 10th in the Northeast and 109th nationally with a floor NQS of 9.870. McMullen’s season has been marked by six podium finishes, including victories against Towson and Yale on February 1st at Lundholm Gym, at LIU (alongside Bridgeport and Rhode Island College) on February 20th, and against Southern Connecticut State on March 4th at Lundholm.

McMullen’s personal best of 9.925, achieved on February 1st, showcases her ability to perform at a high level. She has consistently scored 9.800 or higher in 10 of her 12 meets this season, demonstrating her reliability and skill. Her leadership and consistent performance have been invaluable to the UNH gymnastics team.

All-Around Excellence: Serena Mullin’s Senior Season

Senior Serena Mullin will compete in the all-around competition, capping off a remarkable career with the Wildcats. Mullin earned All-EAGL First Team honors on uneven bars, floor, and in the all-around, and All-EAGL Second Team honors on vault and beam. She has achieved 12 first-place finishes in 12 meets this season, demonstrating her versatility and dominance across all events.

Mullin topped the podium twice on vault (March 4th and March 8th), twice on bars (January 27th and February 8th), three times on floor (January 27th, February 8th, and March 8th), and five times in the all-around (January 27th, February 8th, February 20th, February 27th, and March 8th). The three-time EAGL Gymnast of the Week is ranked 47th nationally and second in the Northeast with an all-around NQS of 39.155. Her career-high scores include 9.850 on vault (March 4th) and bars (February 8th and March 4th), a season-high 9.900 on floor (February 8th), and a season-best all-around score of 39.225 (January 27th and February 20th).

Looking Ahead: NCAA Championship Qualification

The top two teams from each regional will automatically qualify for the NCAA National Championships, which will take place from April 16-18 in Fort Worth, Texas, at Dickies Arena. The NCAA provides a comprehensive schedule and results page for the championships. In addition to the team qualifiers, the top all-around competitor and top event specialist from each regional (who are not on an advancing team) will also earn a spot at the national championships. Event specialists will only compete in the events in which they qualified.

The UNH gymnasts will be looking to capitalize on their strong performances and compete for a chance to advance to the national stage. Their dedication, skill, and teamwork will be crucial as they navigate the challenging competition in Baton Rouge. The Wildcats’ presence at the regional championship is a testament to the program’s growth and the individual achievements of Harvey, McMullen, and Mullin.
