Tarja Turunen – “Frisson Noir”: New Metal Album Details & Tour Dates

Former Nightwish vocalist Tarja Turunen is preparing to release what she describes as her heaviest album to date, “Frisson Noir,” on June 12 via earMUSIC. The album marks a firm return to metal for the classically trained singer, after years of exploring diverse musical territories. This new work isn’t simply a stylistic shift, but a statement of identity, strength, and belonging, according to a press release.

“Frisson Noir” isn’t just about volume; it’s about creating a cinematic experience. Turunen blends orchestral arrangements, classical influences, and the raw power of contemporary metal, moving between delicate piano passages and intense, guitar-driven moments. The album delves into complex human emotions – fear, beauty, nostalgia, resilience, and more – all anchored by Turunen’s distinctive vocal range, capable of both fragility and operatic force.

A Collaborative Effort with Metal Luminaries

The album boasts an impressive roster of guest musicians, adding further weight to its metal credentials. Dani Filth of Cradle of Filth lends his vocals to one track, although the Finnish cello rock band Apocalyptica likewise contributes. Notably, Marko Hietala, Turunen’s former bandmate from Nightwish, appears on the album, as does Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. The production is helmed by Grammy-winning producer Neal Avron, known for his work with Linkin Park, Skillet, and Disturbed, ensuring a modern and impactful sound.

Exploring the ‘Frisson Noir’ Soundscape

The album’s title, “Frisson Noir,” refers to the physical sensation – the shiver – that music can evoke when sound, emotion, and performance converge. This concept is embodied in the album’s first single, “At Sea,” released today. The song combines Turunen’s vocals with live instrumentation, orchestral arrangements, and a choir recorded in Budapest with the Budapest Art Orchestra and Budapest Art Choir, conducted by Gyorgy Gulyas Nagy. Turunen herself described the song as a journey confronting the unknown, a rollercoaster of emotion designed to challenge listeners.

“With ‘At Sea,’ I take you on a journey where you will confront the unknown,” Turunen said. “It’s a complex song where emotion sits in the front seat of a big rollercoaster. I know I will challenge you with this one… are you ready?”

A Legacy of Solo Work and a Return to Roots

Since embarking on a solo career in 2007, Turunen has consistently released internationally charting albums and cultivated a dedicated fanbase. She has released five rock/metal solo records prior to “Frisson Noir,” including 2019’s “In The Raw.” Her live performances have become a hallmark of her career, known for their emotional intensity and connection with audiences at festivals and venues worldwide.

Turunen’s departure from Nightwish in 2005 was a public one, marked by an open letter published on the band’s website at the end of their tour. The circumstances surrounding her exit have been widely discussed within the metal community, but Turunen has consistently focused on forging her own path.

Turunen has long spoken about the emotional connection between metal and classical music, stating in a past interview with Kerrang! magazine, “Both styles have so much in common. I feel music is just emotion. It can connect people from whatever background. It’s a very personal experience, we all have things we like and don’t like, but ultimately music is just emotion. Metal and classical music are both very emotional genres.”

The release of “Frisson Noir” represents not just a new album for Tarja Turunen, but a reaffirmation of her artistic vision and a bold step back into the heart of the metal genre. The next confirmed step is the album’s release on June 12th, followed by the start of the “Frisson” tour in Berlin on September 30th, 2026.
