Tacoma Lunar New Year Festival: K-Culture, Food & Asia-Pacific Traditions

by Liam O'Connor Sports Editor

Tacoma is set to become a vibrant hub of cultural exchange this weekend as the Asia Pacific Cultural Center (APCC) hosts its 28th annual Lunar New Year celebration at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall. The event, beginning at 11 a.m. On Saturday, February 28, 2026, promises a full day of performances, cuisine, and traditions representing 47 countries across the Asia-Pacific region. This year’s celebration holds particular significance as it is hosted by the Cambodian community, adding a special layer of meaning to the festivities.

For nearly three decades, the APCC’s Lunar New Year event has been a cornerstone of Tacoma’s cultural landscape, drawing thousands of attendees each year. The center, which now operates out of an 18,500-square-foot building after years of searching for a permanent home, has grown from humble beginnings – a staff of two and family volunteers – to a team of 45 employees, according to reporting from The News Tribune. The new center, unveiled in August 2025, includes an art gallery, gift shop, performance hall, and meeting rooms, solidifying its role as a vital resource for the Asian and Pacific Islander community.

A Celebration of Diverse Traditions

Visitors to the Lunar New Year event can expect a rich tapestry of cultural experiences. Approximately 120 booths will showcase food, products, and cultural information from across the Asia-Pacific region, offering a unique opportunity to explore diverse traditions in one location. Traditional art performances from participating countries will take center stage, alongside cultural experience booths and exhibitions of traditional costumes and crafts.

The celebration will also feature dynamic martial arts demonstrations, including a performance by a Korean Taekwondo team, showcasing the power and precision of the discipline. Adding to the excitement, Korea’s Sori Nanta team will deliver an energetic drum performance infused with K-pop music, promising a captivating spectacle for audiences of all ages.

K-Culture Takes Center Stage

Reflecting the growing global popularity of Korean culture, a dedicated booth hosted by K-Now (Korean Cultural Leadership Group) will offer a taste of modern Korean trends. Visitors can sample gluten-free brown rice snacks, black sesame rice crusters, kimchi salsa, and peanut snacks, alongside a K-culture themed photo booth. This initiative aims to connect with a younger audience and introduce them to the diverse facets of Korean culture.

Family-Friendly Activities and Community Engagement

The APCC is committed to making the Lunar New Year celebration a welcoming event for families. The APCC booth will host free activities for children, including origami lessons, face painting, and lotus flower making. These interactive experiences are designed to foster creativity and cultural understanding among younger generations.

According to an APCC official, the event is intended to be “a meaningful time to share the diverse cultures of the Asia-Pacific and understand each other with everyone in the community,” fostering “a festival of harmony where culture and art approach together.” The Asia Pacific Cultural Center represents 47 countries and cultures, offering programs and services honoring their distinct artistry, business protocols, history, and social practices. Looking Ahead

The 28th Annual Lunar New Year celebration at the Tacoma Dome promises to be a vibrant and inclusive event, offering a unique opportunity to experience the richness and diversity of the Asia-Pacific region. The event is open to all local residents and is expected to provide a memorable day of performances, experiences, gourmet food, and cultural immersion. The APCC will continue its mission of bridging communities and generations through art, culture, education, and business, with upcoming events including a Korean Bongsan Mask Dance workshop beginning March 19, 2026.
