The modern pentathlon is making a highly anticipated return to the Southeast Asian Games after a six-year hiatus, alongside the debut of kabaddi. This demanding event, renowned for testing an athlete’s mental fortitude and versatility, combines running, swimming, and precision laser pistol shooting.
Singapore will be represented by two athletes in the laser run, one of three disciplines featured in the competition. The laser run is a grueling test of endurance and accuracy, requiring competitors to complete five 600-meter laps alternating between hard and soft sand. Crucially, between each lap, athletes must successfully hit a target with their laser pistol five times before continuing.
A New Challenge for a Seasoned Runner
Nicole Low, a competitive 5,000-meter runner, is embarking on her first foray into the world of modern pentathlon. She acknowledges that mastering the shooting component is a key focus of her training regimen. “When we are shooting, we have to focus on controlling our breathing, and also learning to isolate ourselves from the competitors and not let their actions affect ours,” Low explained, emphasizing the mental discipline required to succeed. The 27-year-old is dedicating significant effort to honing her aim and developing the psychological resilience necessary to perform under pressure.
Veteran Competitor Eyes Redemption
Also competing for Singapore is Marcus ong, a seasoned athlete who secured a bronze medal in the laser run at the 2019 games. Now 40 years old, Ong is persistent to recapture his past success, committing to a rigorous training schedule of 20 to 24 hours per week. He views this competition as an opportunity to demonstrate that age is no barrier to athletic achievement. “I want to prove to myself at the age of 40, I’ll be able to push my body to the limits. I want to show the young ones that I think age doesn’t matter,” Ong stated, embodying a spirit of perseverance and dedication.
