Mexico City. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo stated that opposition groups anticipated a negative outcome from her recent call with U.S. counterpart Donald Trump.

“Yesterday, during the call, they expected a problematic result to blame the president of Mexico and the 4T,” she said this Tuesday morning, expressing gratitude to U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson for facilitating communication with the former president.

The president asserted that opponents were hoping for a dispute with the U.S. leader “to say: ‘You see, the President does not have the capacity, the United States has to intervene.'”

She recalled historical instances of U.S. intervention in Mexico, noting that the country lost half its territory in one such event, and that the last American attempt to invade was thwarted during the Revolution in 1914.

“Mexico is an independent, free and sovereign country, and it has taken the people of Mexico a lot of work to guarantee that independence and sovereignty (…) Who seeks intervention? Those who do not have internal strength, those who rely on others to be able to guarantee their influence in our country.

“Who speaks about the need for intervention? In general, the majority of those who are not with us, it is the PRIAN in particular. Look who spoke out, from any of the political parties or governors, regarding Venezuela and what they said, because it is important, and what is their vision of the future of Mexico and what national development means.”

The president thanked the U.S. ambassador for his efforts in arranging the call with Trump.

“It must be said, when we ask for support from the ambassador for some effort with the United States government, the ambassador has always helped us, obviously he represents the United States government here and we have a close relationship with them. When we have requested support from the ambassador, we have always had it, thank him.”
