Hersonissos, Greece – For Toby Samuel, a 23-year-old tennis player from Winchester, the past six months have felt like a dream realized. After battling back from a debilitating injury, the Brit has surged through the ATP Challenger Tour, culminating in a career-high ranking and a clear vision: reaching the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. His recent success, including back-to-back titles in Hersonissos, Greece, marks a turning point for a player who once doubted he’d ever return to top form.
Samuel’s ascent hasn’t been without its hurdles. A frustrating bout of bone bruising sidelined him for the majority of the 2024 season, halting momentum and casting a shadow over his aspirations. It wasn’t until midway through 2025 that he felt fully recovered, both physically and mentally. Now, with four Challenger trophies since November, including consecutive victories in Hersonissos this month, Samuel is enjoying a period of sustained success. He currently ranks at world No. 171, a jump of 73 places, according to the Lawn Tennis Association.
“It’s been going well the last half a year – been winning quite a lot which is a nice feeling,” Samuel said. “I’m just trying to retain the momentum through each week, one match at a time, not too far ahead and focus the efforts on each week.” This focused approach has clearly paid off, as he battled through the recent Hersonissos Challenger without dropping a set, defeating Czechia’s Maxim Mrva 6-2, 6-3 in the final to extend his unbeaten run to 15 matches, dating back to February’s M25 Vale do Lobo tournament.
From Injury Setback to Challenger Dominance
The road to recovery wasn’t simple. Bone bruising, while often underestimated, can be a particularly challenging injury for athletes, requiring patience and a carefully managed rehabilitation process. Samuel credits his current form to the alignment of diligent training and a sustained period free from injury. He’s not the only Brit finding success on the Challenger circuit; David Stevenson recently secured his third ATP Challenger title of the season in Cherbourg, France, partnering with Cleeve Harper, as reported by the LTA.
Samuel’s success in Hersonissos wasn’t the only notable performance from British players at the 2026 Crete Challenger. Paul Jubb similarly enjoyed a strong week, reaching the semi-finals before falling to Mrva 6-3, 6-1. The tournament, held on hardcourts from March 2-8, 2026, also saw Jacopo Berrettini and Kimmer Coppejans claim the doubles title, defeating Finn Bass and Anthony Genov 3-6, 6-1, 10-3, according to information from Wikipedia.
The Grand Slam Dream
While Challenger Tour success is significant, Samuel’s ambitions extend far beyond. His next major goal is to qualify for and compete in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. He has previous experience at Wimbledon, reaching the last 32 in doubles in 2023, but has yet to make an appearance in a singles event at one of tennis’s four most prestigious tournaments.
“That’s the next big goal for me,” Samuel stated. “It’s insane that I’m even going to be able to say that I’m playing Grand Slams. You watch it as a kid on TV like, ‘one day maybe I can be there’, but you don’t actually believe it – but now actually doing it feels amazing.” This sentiment reflects a growing confidence and a renewed belief in his potential.
The 2026 Crete Challenger saw Lorenzo Giustino seeded first in the singles draw, followed by Stefanos Sakellaridis, Lukas Neumayer, Alejandro Moro Cañas, and Samuel himself as the fourth seed. Wildcards were awarded to Menelaos Efstathiou, Pavlos Tsitsipas, and Ioannis Xilas, while Jacopo Vasamì received entry through the Junior Accelerator programme. Raúl Brancaccio entered as an alternate, and a host of players battled through qualifying rounds to earn their place in the main draw.
Looking Ahead
Samuel’s journey is a testament to perseverance and the power of focused training. His current ranking and recent form position him well for upcoming tournaments and qualification attempts for the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. The tennis world will be watching to see if this rising star can translate his Challenger success onto the biggest stage. The next scheduled event for Samuel is currently unconfirmed, but updates on his schedule and progress can be found on the Lawn Tennis Association website.
