Samsung Prepares Surprise One UI 8.5 Update, Closing the Gap with Pixel and iPhone

Samsung Galaxy users could receive a significant software boost sooner than expected. A surprise beta program for One UI 8.5 is reportedly on the horizon, potentially launching within six weeks, bringing a wave of new security and privacy features to the Android ecosystem.

Samsung has historically trailed Google’s Pixel devices in the speed of Android updates. However, with Android 16 now rolling out, the company is focusing on enhancing its own user experience. The upcoming One UI 8.5 is slated to debut with the Galaxy S26 series next year, with compatibility extending to all devices running One UI 8.

“It’s unusual for Samsung to hold beta programs for these mid-cycle One UI updates,” one industry analyst noted, adding that “nothing about One UI has been typical recently.” This unexpected move signals a heightened commitment to rapid iteration and feature delivery.

Enhanced Privacy Features Lead the Charge

While many One UI 8.5 features will be broadly available, the most innovative addition – a privacy display that masks screen content – will initially be exclusive to the Galaxy S26. This feature requires upgraded hardware to function effectively.

However, other key improvements will be accessible across a wider range of Samsung devices. Notably, One UI 8.5 will integrate Google’s automatic call screening functionality, mirroring a recent addition to Apple’s iOS 26. This feature answers calls from unknown numbers, requesting details before connecting, offering a powerful defense against unwanted solicitations. The widespread adoption of this technology across major platforms poses a significant challenge to the world of cold calling.

Balancing Security and User Flexibility

Samsung is also addressing the complexities of sideloading apps with potential changes to its Auto Blocker feature. Currently, Auto Blocker, part of the “Maximum Restrictions” settings, prevents the installation of apps from outside the official Google Play Store.

According to reports, One UI 8.5 may allow users to temporarily disable Auto Blocker for up to 30 minutes, automatically re-enabling it afterward. This would provide a convenient workaround for users needing to sideload apps for testing or specific purposes while maintaining a robust security posture by default. This approach mirrors Google’s option to disable Play Protect for a limited time. However, some experts caution that normalizing the disabling of security features, even temporarily, could be counterproductive. Fortunately, Google’s upcoming developer verification system is expected to significantly reduce the risks associated with sideloading.

Expanding Security and Parental Controls

Beyond call screening and sideloading adjustments, One UI 8.5 is expected to introduce a suite of additional security enhancements, including:

  • Advanced Protection support for USB connections
  • Local parental controls for enhanced child safety
  • A Secure Lock Device toggle
  • A Phone Theft Protection toggle
  • Expanded Identity Check functionality for broader app compatibility

These updates demonstrate a concerted effort by both Google and Samsung to elevate Android security, narrowing the gap with iPhone. It is therefore crucial that Samsung swiftly distributes these updates to its extensive user base.

If the anticipated One UI 8.5 beta program launches in November, the immediate focus will be on the speed of its rollout to flagship devices beyond the Galaxy S26. Watch this space.
