Samsung Abandons Ultra-Thin ‘Edge’ Design with Galaxy S26 Cancellation
Samsung is reportedly scaling back its ambitions in the ultra-thin smartphone market, canceling development of the Galaxy S26 Edge due to disappointing sales of the Galaxy S25 Edge. The move signals a potential end to the “Edge” series, as the south Korean tech giant refocuses on its core flagship models.
The decision, first reported by South Korean media outlet NewsPim, comes as sales of the S25 Edge substantially underperformed expectations. A senior official within Samsung stated, “I’m not sure about the thin product line… will it return? But as of now, it seems unlikely. It’s almost disappeared.” this assessment underscores the uncertainty surrounding the future of the distinctive, slimline design.
while Samsung completed development of the S26 Edge, reports suggest the device might potentially be resurrected under a different product line in the future. Though, the immediate impact is a streamlining of Samsung’s smartphone strategy.
the lackluster performance of the S25 Edge is starkly illustrated by shipment figures released by Hana Investment & securities. As of August, only 1.31 million units of the S25 Edge had been shipped. This pales in comparison to the 8.28 million units of the standard Galaxy S25, 5.05 million of the S25+, and a leading 12.18 million of the flagship S25 Ultra. These numbers clearly demonstrate that consumers are prioritizing performance and features over the ultra-thin form factor.
The cancellation of the Edge series allows Samsung to concentrate resources on its core offerings. The company is expected to launch three flagship Galaxy S26 smartphones in January: the Galaxy S26 Pro, S26 Plus, and S26 Ultra. This focused approach is intended to help Samsung navigate the increasingly competitive global premium smartphone market.
By consolidating its efforts, Samsung aims to deliver more compelling and feature-rich devices to consumers, signaling a return to its established strengths in smartphone innovation.
