R Programming Language: Is It Growing?

R Programming Language Reclaims Top 10 Spot Amid Rising Demand for Data Science

Despite criticisms from some corners of the software engineering world, the R programming language is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, cracking the top 10 in the December 2025 TIOBE Index. This renewed interest coincides with the growing importance of statistics and large-scale data visualization.

The TIOBE Index, published December 7, ranks programming languages based on the number of skilled engineers world-wide, courses and third party vendors. R secured the tenth position with a 1.96% rating. While R has previously appeared in the top 10 – notably in April and July of 2020 – it has not consistently maintained that position in recent years.

However, the PYPL Popularity of Programming Language Index presents a different outlook, ranking R fifth this month with a 5.84% share. This discrepancy highlights the varying methodologies employed by different ranking systems. TIOBE focuses on broader industry indicators, while PYPL specifically tracks the frequency of searches for language tutorials on Google.

“Programming language R is known for fitting statisticians and data scientists like a glove,” stated the CEO of software quality services vendor Tiobe in a recent bulletin. Despite being overshadowed by Python in overall adoption, R continues to excel in specific areas. According to the CEO, R remains a powerful tool for rapid experimentation, statistical modeling, and exploratory data analysis.

The rise of R mirrors a similar trend observed with Wolfram/Mathematica, suggesting a broader shift towards tools optimized for complex data analysis. While “customary” software engineers may express reservations about R’s unconventional syntax and perceived limitations in scalability for large production systems, its value within academic and research-driven sectors remains undeniable.

The broader landscape of programming language popularity reveals a consistent dominance by Python, holding the top spot with 23.64%. TechRepublic notes that the languages promptly following Python remain relatively stable, but significant movement is occurring further down the list. SQL climbed from tenth to eighth place with a 2.10% rating, while Perl experienced a resurgence, holding ninth at 1.97% with a 1.33% gain.

Here’s a comparison of the TIOBE and PYPL rankings as of December 2025:

TIOBE PYPL
Python Python
C C/C++
C++ objective-C
Java Java
C# R
JavaScript JavaScript
Visual basic Swift
SQL C#
Perl PHP
R Rust

Despite the differing methodologies, both indices agree on the top three languages: Python, Java, and JavaScript, occupying the first, fourth, and seventh positions respectively.

The CEO of Tiobe acknowledged the dynamic nature of programming language popularity, stating, “We have seen many TIOBE index top 10 entrants rising and falling. It will be interesting to see whether R can maintain its current position.” The coming months will reveal whether R’s recent gains represent a lasting trend or a temporary fluctuation in the ever-evolving world of programming languages.
