Pamiers is facing a “fragile” financial situation, according to a candidate in the upcoming municipal elections, who is raising concerns about a lack of long-term planning and mounting debt for the French city.
Financial Concerns Take Center Stage
Table of Contents
Pascal Augery, leading the Demain Pamiers list!, is scrutinizing the city’s finances, arguing that Pamiers needs “structured thought” and a return to “the fundamentals of municipal action.”
Augery’s criticisms center on the city’s precarious financial state, with debt per capita exceeding that of comparable municipalities. He criticizes the current administration for a lack of “overall coherence” in its initiatives. The Demain pamiers list! proposes a return to “the fundamentals of municipal action,” including public safety, healthcare access, and sound finances. Potential solutions include exploring a mixed-economy company and even demolishing underperforming real estate assets. The list has unveiled a program estimating €10 million in annual investment for improvements.
“Despite some successes, here and there, with projects without overall coherence which leave aside obvious priorities, Pamiers is no longer thought for to long,” Augery analyzed. He proposes a focus on “a safe and clean city, favorable access to healthcare and finances in order.”
The Numbers Don’t Add Up
According to analyses conducted by Vincent Lelong, a retired public accountant and former departmental payer of Tarn, and a member of augery’s list, the city’s “financial situation would be fragile.” Lelong estimates the “debt per capita clearly higher than that of cities of the same size, with a repayment burden higher than the average.”
“This is a question that is rarely discussed, even though it is essential for municipal action,” Augery pointed out. “What we see very simply is that we have,at the same time, taxes among the highest in the department,a considerable debt… we can question the quality of services and the projects. No media library worthy of the name, no performance hall…”
Lelong directly refuted mayor Frédérique Thiennot’s claim that the city’s finances have been cleaned up, stating, “it’s false.”
town Planning Shortcomings
The Demain Pamiers! list! also criticizes the city’s town planning policies, citing a substantial real estate portfolio as a financial burden. “A substantial real estate portfolio: behind it, it’s cost,” augery noted. “It’s a problem of overall mismanagement, which penalizes investments. It’s a problem of consistency.”
The possibility of creating a mixed economy company, with assistance from caisse des Dépôts, is being explored, and “Demolishing” is also being considered as an option.
A Glimpse at the Platform
the Demain pamiers! platform includes proposals such as establishing a medical office, creating “neighborhood representatives,” strengthening the municipal police, overhauling the traffic plan, developing the banks of the Ariège river, and organizing events to promote the city’s heritage. The list estimates it can invest around €10 million per year to implement these initiatives, and public meetings are planned to present the program and gather further input.
