OhioHealth Pickerington Hospital Expands ED & Adds Inpatient Beds

by Grace Chen

Pickerington, OH – OhioHealth Pickerington Methodist Hospital has begun a $65 million expansion project designed to address growing demand for emergency and inpatient services in the rapidly developing eastern Columbus suburb. The two-story, 57,000-square-foot addition will significantly increase the hospital’s capacity, adding 28 emergency department treatment rooms and 16 inpatient beds. This investment reflects a broader trend of healthcare facilities expanding to meet the needs of growing communities, and specifically acknowledges the strong support the hospital has received since transitioning from a medical campus to a full-service hospital in 2023.

The expansion is a direct response to increasing patient volume. In fiscal year 2025, the emergency department treated just over 44,000 patients, according to hospital officials. The added space is intended to alleviate congestion and improve the overall patient experience, ensuring timely and efficient care. The project underscores the importance of accessible healthcare infrastructure in supporting community well-being, particularly as populations shift and age.

Expanding Emergency Care Capabilities

The most substantial component of the expansion focuses on the emergency department. Currently, the ED features 16 treatment rooms. The addition of 28 recent rooms will bring the total to 44, providing significantly more space to handle surges in patient volume. Beyond simply adding beds, the expansion includes a second resuscitation room – critical for immediately stabilizing patients with life-threatening conditions – and an additional triage room, streamlining the initial assessment process. Two new intake rooms will further improve patient flow and reduce wait times. Efficient triage and rapid assessment are key components of effective emergency care, and these additions aim to optimize those processes.

Increasing Inpatient Capacity to Meet Regional Needs

Alongside the emergency department improvements, the expansion will add 16 inpatient beds, bringing the total on the second floor to 24. This increase in inpatient capacity is designed to facilitate faster admissions from the emergency department, reducing bottlenecks and improving overall hospital efficiency. OhioHealth Pickerington Methodist Hospital serves a growing regional population, and the additional beds will help meet the increasing need for acute care services. The hospital’s growth reflects the broader demographic shifts occurring in central Ohio, with increasing numbers of residents seeking local healthcare options.

A Community Investment

“We expanded from a medical campus to a hospital in 2023 and the support from the community has been tremendous,” said Kevin Lutz, DPM, President, Pickerington Methodist Hospital. “To continue to provide high-quality patient care for those who live and work in the area, we’ve realized we need to grow to meet the increasing demand for emergency and inpatient care.” Dr. Lutz emphasized that the expansion is not merely about physical space, but about maintaining a commitment to patient-centered care. The hospital’s leadership has actively engaged with the community to understand its evolving healthcare needs, and this expansion is a direct response to that feedback.

The project is being led by Cannon Design as the architect and Messer Construction Co. As the lead contractor. Both firms have extensive experience in healthcare construction, ensuring the project adheres to the highest standards of quality and safety. Messer Construction has previously worked on several OhioHealth projects, including renovations at OhioHealth Dublin Methodist Hospital, according to their project portfolio.

Construction is anticipated to last approximately three years, with an expected completion date in late 2028. Throughout the construction process, the hospital will maintain full operations, minimizing disruption to patient care. OhioHealth officials have pledged to keep the community informed about the project’s progress through regular updates on the hospital’s website and social media channels.

The expansion of OhioHealth Pickerington Methodist Hospital represents a significant investment in the health and well-being of the community it serves. By increasing capacity in both the emergency department and inpatient units, the hospital is positioning itself to meet the growing healthcare needs of a rapidly expanding region. The next major milestone will be the completion of the structural framework, anticipated in the spring of 2025, according to project timelines released by OhioHealth.
