Nio Supplies Battery Packs to McLaren: Partnership Deepens with Abu Dhabi Backing

by mark.thompson business editor

The electric vehicle landscape continues to shift, with increasing collaboration between automakers as they navigate the complexities of battery technology and global markets. In a recent development, Nio Inc., the Chinese EV manufacturer, is now supplying battery packs to British supercar maker McLaren, according to a statement from Nio founder, chairman, and CEO William Li. This partnership underscores a deepening relationship between the two companies, both of which are backed by significant investment from Abu Dhabi.

Li revealed the arrangement during a user event in Wuhan, Hubei province, as reported by auto blogger @特来哥_谢老板. While details remain limited, the move represents a significant step in the technical cooperation between Nio and McLaren, a collaboration that began to solidify in September 2025 when Nio first confirmed its partnership with McLaren, noting that technical service revenue was primarily driven by the British automaker.

Abu Dhabi’s Role in Strengthening the Alliance

The connection between Nio and McLaren extends beyond technological synergy; it’s too rooted in shared financial backing. Both companies are now heavily supported by L’imad Holding, a new Abu Dhabi state holding company. In January 2026, Abu Dhabi consolidated its stakes in both Nio and McLaren, previously held by CYVN Holdings, into L’imad, aiming for more streamlined investment management. According to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing, L’imad currently holds a 17.9% stake in Nio. The fund is wholly owned by the Abu Dhabi government through the Abu Dhabi Department of Finance, and its board is chaired by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

This consolidation followed CYVN’s completion of the acquisition of McLaren’s automotive business in April 2025. At the time, CYVN stated that McLaren would benefit from electrification support through its strategic investment in Nio, setting the stage for the current battery supply agreement.

Details of the Battery Supply Agreement

While Li didn’t disclose specifics during the event, reporting from local media outlet Yiou in June 2025 indicated that Nio would develop power batteries specifically for McLaren’s hybrid models. These battery packs are reportedly based on Nio’s internally developed 4680 large cylindrical battery cells. Initial production in 2026 is expected to be limited, with battery pack capacity around 10 kWh.

Nio’s Broader Battery Strategy

This deal with McLaren comes as Nio continues to invest heavily in battery technology. The company recently established a new battery tech firm in Shanghai, focused on accelerating research and development of solid-state batteries, with scaled application anticipated after 2027. This move signals Nio’s commitment to staying at the forefront of battery innovation, a critical component in the rapidly evolving EV market.

The collaboration with McLaren isn’t just about supplying components; it’s about leveraging Nio’s expertise in battery technology to support the British automaker’s transition to electric and hybrid vehicles. As the automotive industry accelerates towards electrification, partnerships like these are becoming increasingly common, allowing companies to share resources and accelerate development timelines.

The next key update regarding this partnership is expected in the coming months, as Nio and McLaren begin low-volume production of the 10 kWh battery packs. Investors and industry observers will be watching closely to see how this collaboration unfolds and its impact on both companies’ respective positions in the global automotive market.
