My New Band Believe has unveiled a complex, transatlantic live video for the non-album track “Kick Me,” arriving as a daring precursor to the release of their debut studio album tomorrow. The six-minute recording is less a traditional live clip and more a technical collage, stitched together from the multitracks of seven different performances that jump between London and New York City.
The production mirrors the experimental spirit of the project, blending highlights from various shows to create a singular, seamless experience. The track features a dense instrumental layering, including Wurlitzer contributions from Seth Evans, guitar work by Luke Mark, and a rhythmic foundation provided by double drums from King David Ike-Elechi and Steve Noble. The centerpiece of the recording is a shared guitar solo between Ryley Walker and Tara Cunningham, which the band describes as a transatlantic exchange.
The project is led by Cameron Picton, who previously served as the bassist and occasional frontman for the avant-garde powerhouse black midi. Following the group’s dissolution in 2023, Picton spent time navigating the space between being a collaborator and a bandleader. This period of transition eventually formed the basis of My New Band Believe, a project that avoids the conventions of a standard solo record in favor of a collective, ensemble-driven approach.
From Controlled Chaos to Dream Logic
While black midi was known for “controlled chaos” and explosive musical world-building, Picton’s new direction leans into a more hallucinatory, fluid atmosphere. The upcoming debut album is described as a work of dream logic, moving through erratic emotional registers and thematic shifts. Picton adopts the role of an unreliable but charismatic narrator, guiding the listener through a fragmented sonic multiverse.
To achieve this sound, Picton has assembled a cast of high-caliber musicians. The recording features Kiran Leonard, Caius Williams, Steve Noble, and Andrew Cheetham, who facilitate translate Picton’s “hysterical ideas” into a cohesive, if challenging, musical language. The result is an album that seeks to find a new kind of sense within conflicting and fragmentary arrangements.
