Brisbane indie-pop band Mid Drift is quickly gaining attention for their blend of catchy melodies, thoughtful lyrics, and energetic live performances. The five-piece group, fresh off a debut at the Laneway festival, is poised to reach a wider audience as they prepare to join Ocean Alley on tour. Their recently released EP, Good at Avoiding, builds on the foundation laid by 2024’s Lemon, Lime & Tanlines, showcasing a more mature and grounded sound that resonates with listeners.
For fans of bands like Ocean Alley and Lime Cordiale, Mid Drift offers a similar vibe – a laid-back, coastal sensibility infused with introspective songwriting. The band’s music explores the complexities of growing up, navigating relationships, and the often-messy process of self-discovery. This exploration is particularly evident in their latest EP, which tackles themes of avoidance and the challenges of confronting challenging emotions. The band’s ability to balance these heavier themes with upbeat instrumentation and earworm hooks is a key part of their appeal, making them a standout act in the Australian music scene.
Finding Inspiration and Early Beginnings
Vocalist Sarah Engstrom credits singer-songwriter Missy Higgins as a major influence, recalling listening to Higgins’ CDs during countless car rides growing up. “I’m still in awe of her and just love how honest and beautifully written her lyrics are,” Engstrom shared. This appreciation for honest songwriting seems to be a guiding principle for Mid Drift, as their lyrics often delve into personal experiences and vulnerabilities.
Engstrom’s passion for music began at a young age, with her mother capturing videos of her playing piano and composing songs as early as age seven. “Mum actually pulled out the video on my 21st birthday – in retrospect it’s the most rubbish song I’ve ever heard – but I guess the passion was there early on!” she said, reflecting on her musical journey.
Career Highlights and the Road Ahead
Guitarist George Swan highlighted several key moments in the band’s career so far, including selling out their own tours and witnessing audiences sing along to their lyrics. “Seeing people sing our lyrics back to us… that’ll never get old,” Swan noted. Sharing the stage with artists they admire has likewise been a significant milestone for the band.
The upcoming tour supporting Ocean Alley represents a particularly exciting opportunity for Mid Drift. Swan described the chance to play alongside Ocean Alley as a “full circle moment,” recalling discovering the band’s music as a teenager. “I still remember the exact first time I heard Ocean Alley… We blasted that EP for months!” he said, referencing Ocean Alley’s Yellow Mellow EP.
Diving into “Madness” and the “Good at Avoiding” EP
Mid Drift’s latest single, “Madness,” offers a glimpse into the themes explored on the Good at Avoiding EP. Engstrom described the track as having a “feminine rage” to it, exploring the experience of remaining in a difficult situation without actively seeking change. “It’s about knowingly staying in a messy situation but not doing anything to actively change it – which funnily enough ties closely into the themes of the new EP, Good at Avoiding,” she explained.
The band members emphasize the importance of resilience and patience in navigating the music industry. Swan believes resilience is “everything,” while Engstrom notes the require to learn timing and accept rejection. Both also highlight the value of building positive relationships with others in the industry, emphasizing the importance of being friendly and open to learning from everyone they meet.
Defining Their Sound and Future Plans
When asked to describe their music to a potential fan, Engstrom offered a vivid image: “I’d love to say our music feels like stumbling across a hidden gem on a long summer drive. It’s the kind of tracks that feel uncomplicated on the surface but stick with you afterwards. I’d like to hope it’s similar to the feeling of discovering Lime Cordiale or Ocean Alley for the first time.”
Looking ahead to 2026 and beyond, Mid Drift has ambitious plans. Swan stated that the band intends to focus on constant songwriting, releasing honest music, and delivering captivating live shows. “Expect lots of touring from us this year!” he added. The band’s commitment to their craft and their growing fanbase suggest a bright future for this up-and-coming Australian act.
Mid Drift’s tour dates with Ocean Alley are expected to kick off this weekend, offering fans a chance to experience their music live. The band continues to build momentum, and their dedication to creating authentic and relatable music positions them as a band to watch in the Australian indie-pop scene.
