Gallen a “Stearns-y” Signing?
According to an article by Chris Landers of FanSided, the Mets are being urged to sign Gallen. Landers noted, “Gallen just feels like a very Stearns-y signing, doesn’t he? His market has clearly been depressed by a down contract year in 2025, and having the qualifying offer attached to him doesn’t help, but it wasn’t too long ago that he was posting back-to-back top-five finishes in NL Cy Young voting with Arizona. He’s still only 30, and he seemed to get back to something closer to his old self down the stretch last season.”
Gallen earned an All-Star selection in 2023, racking up 220 strikeouts across 210 innings pitched.
Over recent seasons, Gallen has established himself as a reliable workhorse, consistently making over 30 starts and logging more than 180 innings annually. This durability has contributed to his market value, even after a 2025 season where he posted a 4.83 ERA.
What is Gallen’s Market Value?
Estimates from Spotrac.com place Gallen’s market value at a four-year, $74.9 million contract, translating to an average annual value of $18.7 million. baseballreference.com projects Gallen to record a 4.21 ERA over 171 innings in 2026.
While he may not replicate his 200-strikeout seasons, Gallen’s ability to consistently eat innings would be a valuable asset to the Mets’ rotation, currently anchored by David Peterson and Clay Holmes. Peterson and Holmes form a solid one-two punch, but adding a pitcher like Gallen as a third option would provide crucial depth
