Palm Beach, Florida – A 21-year-classic man from North Carolina was shot and killed by law enforcement early Sunday morning after breaching the secure perimeter of Mar-a-Lago, former President Donald Trump’s residence in Palm Beach. The incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. When officers spotted the man, later identified as Austin Tucker Martin of Cameron, North Carolina, carrying a shotgun and a fuel can near the north gate of the property, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
Martin was confronted by a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy and two U.S. Secret Service agents, who ordered him to drop his weapons. Sheriff Ric L. Bradshaw stated during a news conference that Martin initially dropped the fuel can but then raised the shotgun into a shooting position. Both the deputy and the Secret Service agents then discharged their firearms, fatally wounding Martin. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No law enforcement personnel were injured during the encounter.
The incident occurred although President Trump was at the White House in Washington, D.C., having hosted the annual Governors Dinner on Saturday night, as reported by C-SPAN. The Secret Service confirmed it is working with the FBI and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to investigate Martin’s background, actions, and potential motives.
Missing Person Report Preceded the Incident
Hours before the shooting, Martin’s family reported him missing. Around 7 a.m. Eastern time on Sunday, Melissa Martin, believed to be Austin’s mother, posted a plea on Facebook asking for help locating her son. She shared a missing person notice describing him as approximately 6 feet tall and driving a 2013 silver Volkswagen Tiguan, stating he was last heard from at 7:51 p.m. Saturday. Melissa Martin has not yet publicly commented further on the incident.
Braeden Fields, Martin’s 19-year-old cousin, told the Associated Press that his family are Trump supporters and that Martin was a quiet individual who was reportedly afraid of guns. “I wouldn’t believe he would do something like this. It’s mind-blowing,” Fields said. “He wouldn’t even hurt an ant. He doesn’t even know how to employ a gun.” Fields also noted that Martin worked at a local golf course and operated a small artwork business called Fresh Sky Illustrations, which focused on golf course artwork.
Investigation Underway, Agents on Leave
The FBI has taken the lead in the investigation, with its Evidence Response Team processing the scene and collecting evidence. Brett Skiles, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Miami field office, has asked residents in the area to review their exterior security cameras for any potentially relevant footage and contact authorities if they locate anything suspicious. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine administrative leave, in accordance with Secret Service policy.
According to the Secret Service, the officers involved were wearing body cameras, and the footage will be part of the investigation. Sheriff Bradshaw stated that, as of Sunday morning, Martin was not known to law enforcement.
A Pattern of Threats Against Political Figures
This incident at Mar-a-Lago is the latest in a series of concerning events involving threats and violence directed at political figures across the ideological spectrum. In July 2024, President Trump survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Months later, a man with a rifle was apprehended by the Secret Service near Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course.
Beyond incidents targeting Trump, other political leaders have faced threats. In September 2025, conservative activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during a debate at Utah Valley University. Similarly, in June 2025, Minnesota state House Democratic leader Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally shot by a man posing as a police officer. In April 2024, the Pennsylvania governor’s mansion was set on fire. The January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol also underscored the potential for political violence.
Following the incident, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, in an interview with Fox News, attributed some of the escalating political violence to “venom” from the left, citing a recent U.S. Senate campaign ad by Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton that featured individuals expressing strong anti-Trump sentiments.
Next Steps in the Investigation
The FBI continues to lead the investigation into the shooting at Mar-a-Lago, focusing on determining Martin’s motives and any potential connections to extremist groups or individuals. Authorities are expected to release further details as the investigation progresses. The Secret Service is also conducting an internal review of its security protocols at Mar-a-Lago in light of the breach.
