Lyon Tram T6 Disruption: Line Partially Suspended After Power Line Damage

by ethan.brook News Editor

Villeurbanne residents faced disruptions to public transportation Tuesday morning after a newly extended tram line experienced a significant service interruption. The T6 tram line, which had only been extended to La Doua on Saturday, February 14th, is partially suspended due to a damaged overhead catenary, impacting commuters and raising questions about the swiftness of the rollout. This incident involving the Villeurbanne tram line highlights the challenges of expanding public transit infrastructure in urban areas.

According to Radioscoop, the issue occurred around 7:00 AM at the intersection of Cours Tolstoï and Rue Paul Verlaine. A pantograph – the device connecting a tram to the power supply – was torn from a tram car after a catenary, the overhead wire providing electricity, was ripped down. The damage also affects other transit lines in the area.

Tram Service Interrupted, Bus Replacement in Effect

As a result of the damage, tram service on the T6 line is currently suspended between the Grandclément and La Doua – Gaston Berger stations. Transport Lyonnais (TCL), the city’s public transportation authority, has implemented a bus replacement service to help passengers navigate the affected area. Buses are running between Gare de Villeurbanne and Geneviève-de-Gaulle stations, offering a temporary alternative for those relying on the T6 line. TCL initially estimated service would be restored by 11:00 AM, but has now revised that estimate to 6:00 PM.

The timing of the disruption is particularly notable, coming just three days after the official inauguration of the T6 extension. The extension was intended to improve connectivity between the Hôpitaux Est in Bron and the La Doua campus in Villeurbanne, shortening the commute to approximately 20 minutes. The project represented a significant investment of 175 million euros and was hailed as a key step in improving the Lyon metropolitan area’s public transportation network.

Impact on Other Transit Lines

The disruption isn’t limited to the T6 tram. The incident has also impacted the TB11 bus line, with stops between Verlaine and Blanqui – Le Rize currently not being served in either direction. The C23 trolleybus line is also affected. TCL anticipates normal service on the TB11 and C23 lines will resume Wednesday morning.

The damage to the catenary, which also powers the TB11 and C23, occurred at a critical point in the network, according to TCL. “The tramway electrical line – which also powers the trambus TB11 and the trolleybus C23 – was damaged, causing the pantograph of a train to fall to the ground,” TCL teams explained, as reported by Le Progrès.

Maintenance Crews Working to Restore Service

Maintenance teams are currently on site assessing the damage and working to determine the cause of the catenary failure. The focus is on repairing the infrastructure and ensuring the safety of the line before resuming service. The extent of the damage and the complexity of the repairs are contributing to the extended estimated restoration time.

The incident raises questions about the robustness of the newly extended infrastructure and the potential for unforeseen issues during the initial phase of operation. While the extension was celebrated as a positive development for the region, this disruption underscores the importance of thorough testing and ongoing maintenance to ensure the reliability of public transportation systems.

For the latest updates on the T6 tram line and other affected transit routes, passengers are advised to consult the TCL website or follow their official social media channels. The situation remains fluid, and further adjustments to service may be necessary as maintenance crews continue their work.

TCL expects to have the T6 tram line fully operational again by 6:00 PM Tuesday. The agency will provide further updates as they become available. Residents are encouraged to check for updates before traveling.
