Liverpool Urged to Pursue Marc Guehi Transfer in january Amid Defensive Concerns

Liverpool must “go all out” to secure the signing of Crystal Palace defender marc Guehi when the January transfer window opens, according to former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy, as concerns mount over the availability of key center-backs. The urgency stems from a recent injury to summer signing Giovanni Leoni, who is sidelined for the season following ACL surgery, leaving Liverpool with a limited number of senior options in a crucial position.

A deal for Guehi was reportedly agreed upon – at a value of £35 million – on the summer transfer deadline, but ultimately collapsed when Crystal Palace were unable to find a suitable replacement. Guehi has since continued to impress for Palace, including a standout performance in their 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Selhurst Park on October 9th.

“We’ve got 11 weeks or so until the window opens,” Murphy stated. “Do they make a move in January and find a short-term fix or just pay what they need to pay for Guehi? I would get Guehi in January.Maybe Palace won’t let it happen but he’s perfect in so many ways.”

murphy highlighted Guehi’s immediate impact potential, emphasizing his familiarity with the Premier League. “He knows the league, won’t need time to settle. he’s calm, he’s rapid and he’s a good footballer. He’s everything you want in a center-back. Liverpool will need to do something.”

Echoes of the Van Dijk Pursuit

The situation, according to murphy, mirrors Liverpool’s protracted pursuit of Virgil van Dijk from southampton.”Liverpool came in for him in the same way they tried to get Van Dijk when Southampton asked for more money at the last minute and the deal fell through, so Liverpool waited and got him in the next window. For such an important position you need the best or the one you want.” He believes a similar approach – prioritizing quality over short-term savings – is warranted in this instance.

The need for defensive reinforcement is further underscored by the current injury situation. Ibrahima Konate has been released early from the France squad to focus on recovery from a thigh injury sustained during Liverpool’s recent defeat at chelsea. Furthermore, Joe Gomez has seen limited playing time this season, featuring for just 29 minutes in the Premier League.

Van Dijk’s Fitness Remains Paramount

This places notable pressure on van Dijk to maintain his fitness.”From a short-term perspective, I think if Virgil were to get an injury that’s a huge problem for Liverpool,” murphy explained. While acknowledging Konate’s capabilities and Gomez’s availability, Murphy stressed the importance of having a reliable choice.

Before the transfer window closed, Murphy believed Guehi was a more pressing need than the pursuit of forward Alexander Isak. “The only reason that might not matter is if Virgil stays fit and he’s got a great habit of staying fit for large parts of the season. He’s in great physical condition and centre-back is probably the best position when it comes to running and doing less miles.”

Competition for Guehi’s signature is intensifying, with Real Madrid reportedly among a number of leading European clubs monitoring his situation. This adds further urgency to Liverpool’s potential move in January. The club’s existing relationship with Guehi and his representatives, Murphy believes, coudl prove beneficial in securing his services.
