Two Palestinian Men Killed in Jenin Raid, Sparking Outrage and Accusations of Execution

The deaths of two Palestinian men during an Israeli military raid in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin on Thursday have ignited international condemnation, with reports suggesting the men were killed after attempting to surrender. The incident underscores a dramatic escalation of violence in the region, occurring amidst a broader crackdown on Palestinians and heightened tensions in the shadow of the conflict in Gaza.

Allegations of Extrajudicial Killings

According to accounts from journalists on the scene and video footage, the two men “pulled their shirts up, showing that they were unarmed” before being ordered back into a building by Israeli forces. Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh, reporting from Ramallah, stated, “And then they were shot dead. They were executed.” these claims have fueled accusations of extrajudicial killings, prompting calls for autonomous investigations.

Israeli military Response and Internal Review

The Israeli army acknowledged pursuing individuals “affiliated with a terror network” and stated that its forces exchanged fire with armed Palestinians. Though, the army also announced an internal review of the incident, acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations. The response wasn’t limited to Palestinian leaders. Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir openly welcomed the killings, declaring on social media that Israeli forces “acted exactly as was to be expected of them – terrorists must die!”

Escalating Violence in the West Bank

This incident is part of a worrying trend of escalating violence. Israeli forces have deployed attack helicopters and drones in raids across the northern West Bank for a second consecutive day, intensifying a months-long crackdown on Palestinians. Israeli troops are currently laying siege to large areas of the northeastern Tubas governorate, following a wide-scale military operation launched on Wednesday.

The Palestinian news agency wafa reported at least 25 Palestinians have been injured and 100 detained since the incursion began. While Israel maintains the operation aims to dismantle Palestinian armed groups, residents allege indiscriminate attacks on civilians, obstruction of medical and journalistic access, and damage to critical infrastructure.

Concerns of War Crimes and Systemic Oppression

The surge in Israeli military and settler violence coincides with the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which United Nations experts and human rights groups have described as a potential genocide. The northern West Bank has been particularly affected, with approximately 32,000 residents of refugee camps displaced as January and barred from returning to their homes.

Last week, Human Rights Watch asserted that the forced eviction of Palestinians from Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nur Shams refugee camps constitutes war crimes and crimes against humanity. “With global attention focused on Gaza, Israeli forces have carried out war crimes, crimes against humanity, and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank that should be investigated and prosecuted,” a Human Rights Watch official stated.

Intensified Raids and Demolition Orders

Al Jazeera’s Odeh noted on Thursday evening that the frequency of Israeli military raids in the occupied West Bank has doubled in the past two years, averaging 47 raids per day. Reports also indicate escalating brutality, with scores of Palestinians, including an 85-year-old man, reportedly beaten by Israeli soldiers during this week’s assault. “This raid is more severe than other raids happening across the occupied West Bank. It is indeed certainly the Israeli army flexing its muscle,” Odeh observed, adding that the violence represents “an escalated level of violence meted out to civilians.”

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) condemned the violence and highlighted the continued issuance of demolition orders in the northern West Bank, despite “relentless” destruction over the past year. twelve buildings in Jenin refugee camp are slated for demolition this week, with another 11 scheduled for partial demolition. Roland Friedrich, director of UNRWA affairs for the West Bank, stated on X that over 200 buildings in the camp currently face demolition orders as February, representing “systematic destruction” that undermines international law and strengthens Israeli control.

Amnesty International characterized the intensified Israeli military operations as part of “Israel’s cruel system of apartheid against Palestinians” in the occupied territory, calling on the international community to prevent further attacks on civilians and to address Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands.
