Jane Fonda Reflects on a Year of Loss, Honors Late Friends Redford, Keaton, and Hackman

A year marked by profound grief has spurred Jane Fonda to reaffirm her commitment to advocacy work, honoring the legacies of three close friends and Hollywood icons she lost in recent months. The 87-year-old actress shared her reflections during an appearance at the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power and Potential’s 30th Anniversary EmPower Party, an organization she founded to support youth health initiatives.

A Difficult 2025 Marked by Loss

Fonda described 2025 as one of the most challenging years of her life, deeply impacted by the deaths of Robert Redford, Diane Keaton, and Gene Hackman. The actress openly acknowledged the emotional toll of losing friends and colleagues as she navigates the realities of aging.

Remembering Robert Redford

Fonda was particularly moved by the passing of Robert Redford in September. She recalled their decades-long friendship, stemming from their 1967 collaboration in the comedy “Barefoot in the Park.” “He meant a lot to me personally and professionally,” Fonda said, adding that the news of his death left her in tears. Redford, a prolific star and director, left behind a remarkable body of work spanning multiple decades. His publicist confirmed he died in his sleep on September 16.

The Sudden Loss of Diane Keaton

The actress was also stunned by the death of Diane Keaton in October, revealing they had spoken shortly before Keaton’s passing. “I just finished working with her,” Fonda shared. Keaton, renowned for her iconic roles in films like “The Godfather” and “Annie Hall,” died on October 11 from pneumonia, as confirmed by a statement from her family members.

Honoring Gene Hackman’s Legacy

Fonda also fondly remembered Gene Hackman, praising his support for her nonprofit organization and acknowledging his significant contributions to Hollywood. Hackman, an Academy Award winner for “The French Connection,” had been a longtime friend. He passed away on February 27 in his New Mexico home, with the cause of death attributed to hypertensive cardiovascular disease with severe signs of Alzheimer’s disease as a significant contributing factor.

Continuing the Fight

“It’s been a tough year,” Fonda admitted, acknowledging the emotional weight of witnessing the passing of peers. Despite her grief, Fonda expressed a resolute determination to continue her advocacy work, viewing it as a way to honor the causes her friends championed. She intends to carry forward their spirit of dedication and commitment to positive change.
