Islamabad’s long-delayed new jail project is nearing completion after 15 years, with over 85 percent of the first phase now finished, officials said Thursday. It’s a turnaround that raises questions about why it took so long—and what finally spurred action.
Jail and Police Academy Projects See Renewed Momentum
Federal officials are reporting significant progress on key infrastructure projects aimed at bolstering security and police training.
- The Islamabad Model Jail, stalled for nearly 15 years, is expected to be operational within two months.
- Phase One of the jail project is more than 85 percent complete.
- The project now includes digital monitoring systems and a central control room.
- Progress was also reviewed on a new hostel facility at the National Police Academy.
What’s driving this sudden progress on the Islamabad jail? The project, initially launched in 2011, faced prolonged setbacks before renewed efforts within the past year began to yield results.
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited the under-construction Islamabad Model Jail and a hostel project at the National Police Academy on Thursday, February 8, 2024, to assess the development progress. During the visit, Naqvi inspected the barracks of the jail and voiced his satisfaction with the construction’s pace and quality. He emphasized the importance of a modern jail in the federal capital for security reasons.
According to briefings provided to the minister, the updated jail plan incorporates digital monitoring systems and a central control room to enhance security management. The facility is anticipated to be fully operational within the next two months.
Naqvi also reviewed the progress of a new hostel facility at the National Police Academy. He stated that improved infrastructure would elevate the standard of police training, providing better residential facilities for officers once completed.
Senior officials present during the inspections included Inspector General Islamabad Police Ali Nasir Rizvi, Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa, and Director General Federal Investigation Agency Dr Usman Anwar.
