Grand Isle Man Held Without Bail in Deputy Dragging, Attempted Murder Case

by ethan.brook News Editor

A Vermont sheriff’s deputy was dragged by an SUV during a traffic stop Wednesday night, leading to the arrest of a Grand Isle man and charges of attempted murder. The deputy, identified as Sgt. Nicholas Pillsbury of the Grand Isle Sheriff’s Department, was hospitalized but has since been released. The incident, which prompted a manhunt and road closure, has shocked the small Vermont community and raised questions about the motivations behind the alleged attack.

Kevin Marx, 36, of Grand Isle, pleaded not guilty to attempted first-degree murder on Thursday morning, according to reports. The charges stem from an encounter with Sgt. Pillsbury just after 8:10 p.m. Near the intersection of U.S. Route 2 and Ferry Road, also known as Vermont Route 314. Authorities say Pillsbury had stopped Marx’s vehicle for failing to stop at a stop sign.

According to Vermont State Police, after being pulled over, Marx allegedly drove his SUV into Sgt. Pillsbury as the deputy walked back to his cruiser, dragging him a considerable distance before coming to a stop in a wooded area. First responders worked for approximately 30 minutes to free the deputy, who was then transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington. The road was closed for several hours but reopened around 1 a.m. Thursday.

Details of the Arrest and Charges

Following the incident, police launched a manhunt for Marx, ultimately locating and arresting him at his home just before 11 p.m. Wednesday. He is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court again later this month for a weight of the evidence hearing. Grand Isle County State’s Attorney Douglas DiSabito has described the attack as “an outrageous act” and stated he’s “never seen anything like this.”

Marx is facing a number of charges, including attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and grossly negligent operation, according to DiSabito. If convicted of attempted first-degree murder, Marx could face a life sentence.

Community Reaction and Financial Troubles

The incident has deeply affected the community of South Hero and Grand Isle. Bill Terrien, a resident of South Hero, described the scene during the manhunt as unsettling, noting the increased police presence and the widespread concern among residents. “A lot of people were rattled because of the lights and commotion — everyone wanted to know what was going on, the phone started ringing of course,” he said.

Further details emerged regarding Marx’s personal circumstances. Jean Claude Rancoud, Marx’s landlord for the past five years, revealed that Marx had been struggling financially, falling behind on rent and bills. Rancoud described Marx as working long hours and appearing “very alone and abandoned.” He added that he was on the phone with Marx when police arrived at his home, expressing both sympathy and shock at the situation. “I am totally on the side of the police, but I’ll say it’s very unfortunate and I feel bad for him — he seemed very alone and abandoned, you know?”

Deputy’s Recovery and Investigation

Sgt. Pillsbury, who has been with the Grand Isle Sheriff’s Department for 18 months, was treated at the University of Vermont Medical Center and has been released. Whereas his release is a positive sign, State’s Attorney DiSabito emphasized that it does not diminish the severity of the allegations against Marx. “The fact that [Pillsbury] has been released from the hospital does not change how serious the allegations are,” he said.
