Gmail Address Change: Poll & Discussion

by priyanka.patel tech editor

Google is now letting users change their Gmail addresses, a feature long requested by its billions of users. But is a fresh start in your inbox worth the effort?

For years, changing your Google account email address was possible, but a Gmail address-ending in @gmail.com-was locked in.

  • The rollout began with a Hindi translation of Google’s support page, but now appears in numerous languages.
  • Users are reporting triumphant address changes after accessing the dedicated page.
  • the process is straightforward, forwarding existing emails to the new address while preserving account data.
  • Some users worry that email forwarding will also forward spam.

The change surfaced last week when a notice appeared on a Hindi version of Google’s support page, revealing a “gradual rollout” of the new option. As of December 31, the update is visible on translations of the support page for German, Spanish, Japanese, French, and manny others-with one notable exception: the English version.

Despite the English page’s omission, reports are surfacing of users gaining access. Several individuals have shared screenshots and confirmations on social media, demonstrating successful Gmail address changes.

You can check if the option is available for your account here. If available, you’ll see a dedicated page. Otherwise, a message will state, “this setting can’t be changed for your account.”

But will you actually take the plunge? Many are perfectly content with their existing addresses, but a change could be appealing for those whose accounts reflect a past self, or who simply desire a more professional online presence. The automatic email forwarding and preservation of account data make the switch less daunting.Though, some users have expressed concern that forwarding will also deliver unwanted spam to the new address.
