Sports Journalist Gérard Holz Joins Nice Mayoral Candidate Christian Estrosi’s Election List Ahead of 2026 Vote
A prominent sports journalist is bolstering the campaign of Nice’s incumbent mayor as the city prepares for municipal elections. Just over a month before the vote, Gérard Holz announced on February 11th that he would be joining the list of candidates led by Christian Estrosi, the current mayor seeking a third term.
Holz, known for his work as a presenter on the program Stade 2, explained his decision by stating he was “delighted to be able to participate in making this city shine, which for me is already a European capital, magnified by the events supported by the mayor.” This endorsement comes at a strategic moment, particularly as Nice prepares to potentially host elements of the 2030 Winter Olympics.
Estrosi welcomed Holz’s addition to the team, emphasizing the value of his experience and perspective. “His outlook, experience and commitment will be valuable in preparing for the 2030 Winter Olympics in Nice,” Estrosi stated. The closing ceremony of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur regional games is slated to be held in Nice, making the city a focal point for Olympic planning.
Holz, a resident of Nice since 2019, is expected to contribute to the sports department, focusing on preparations for the upcoming Olympic events. This nomination is considered significant, occurring four years before the Games are scheduled to take place.
The move arrives amidst growing political disengagement among French citizens. A recent report indicates that 26% of the population express “disgust” with the current political landscape, signaling a potential challenge for all candidates in the upcoming election.
