FKA Twigs on Trauma, Art & LaBeouf Settlement

LONDON, December 27, 2023 — FKA Twigs is opening up about navigating the complexities of life, acknowledging both its profound beauty and its often-brutal realities. The artist reflected on this duality in a recent interview with ELLE UK, as she approaches her late thirties.

Finding Balance Amidst Extremes

The singer-songwriter discusses holding space for both joy and pain in her life and art.

Looking back on the creation of her critically acclaimed album ‘Eusexua’ – which one publication hailed as a “transcendent artistic experience” – Twigs shared that she’s learned to prioritize self-awareness with age. “I’ve always wanted to be at this perfect cross point of growth and youth – to be able to be young and sexy and healthy – and also not be an idiot like I was in my 20s,” she said.

She continued, “I’m reaching that age where I can really look back at my life, and I can see so many things that have been beautiful and amazing, and other things that have been really brutal and violent.” Twigs emphasized her growing ability to embrace the full spectrum of her experiences. “I’m realising that I can hold my love of life and my artistry and the beauty of my life, and I can also hold the brutality and the sadness and the violence,” she explained. “I can hold things at the same time, and that feels really good.”

What does it mean to truly hold space for both the good and the bad in life? Twigs offered a simple, yet poignant analogy, comparing life to a raspberry: “bitter, but it’s sweet.”

The musician has previously spoken publicly about experiencing violence during a former relationship with actor Shia LaBeouf. In December 2020, she filed a lawsuit against him, alleging physical and verbal abuse, sexual battery, and emotional distress. She alleged that he posed a danger to women, detailing instances of being slammed into a car, subjected to attempted strangulation, and knowingly exposed to a sexually transmitted disease.

LaBeouf has consistently denied the allegations. His legal team responded to the suit at the time, stating he did not inflict harm upon her, and the actor himself has maintained he denies “each and every allegation” made against him.

In July, Twigs dropped the assault and sexual battery lawsuit and reached a settlement outside of court. Attorneys for both parties stated they wished each other “personal happiness, professional success, and peace in the future.”

Upcoming Tour and Recent Accolades

Later this year, the singer-songwriter is set to embark on a European tour, with scheduled performances in Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Paris, and Berlin in June. This follows a North American leg of the tour in the spring. She will also perform a single UK show at London’s O2 Arena on June 10 as part of the ‘Body High’ trek. Tickets for the UK show are available here, while tickets for the North American dates can be purchased here.

On a brighter note, the track ‘Room Of Fools’ from ‘Eusexua’ has been recognized as one of the best songs of 2025, landing at Number 25 on one music publication’s year-end list. The album ‘Eusexua’ itself received a glowing five-star review, with one critic noting that Twigs “has successfully shown that the connection of music, movement, mind, soul and body can be converted into sound.” Its follow-up, ‘…Afterglow’, earned four stars, being described as proof that Twigs remains “one of the most prolific and original alt-pop icons of our times.”
