Former Footballer Sebastian Hertner Dies in Montenegro Chairlift Accident

A tragic accident at a ski resort in Montenegro has claimed the life of Sebastian Hertner, a former professional footballer, and left his wife injured. The incident, which occurred Saturday at the Savin Kuk ski center near Zabljak, is under investigation, with authorities vowing a thorough review of safety protocols.

The 34-year-old Hertner fell approximately 70 meters after two chairlift chairs reportedly slipped into each other, according to reports from the Montenegrin newspaper Pobjeda. His 30-year-old wife was rescued from the lift with injuries.

A Career Cut Short

Hertner recently played for ETSV Hamburg, where he served as captain. The club announced the devastating news on Instagram, expressing profound sadness and offering condolences to his family and loved ones. “It is with great sadness that we have to announce today that our captain Sebastian Hertner has had a fatal accident while on vacation. We are stunned and infinitely sad. Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace Sebastian,” the club posted.

Prior to his time with ETSV Hamburg, Hertner had a distinguished career in German football, playing in the second division for clubs including 1860 Munich, Erzgebirge Aue, and Darmstadt. He also represented Germany at the U19 level, appearing in five matches. Notably, he shared the pitch with future German star Christoph Kramer during a friendly match against Belgium in September 2009.

Investigation Launched After Chairlift Malfunction

The incident occurred while the couple was riding the chairlift in the Durmitor Mountains. The cause of the malfunction remains unclear, but the investigating public prosecutor immediately ordered the chairlift system to be shut down. At least three other vacationers were stranded on the lift for several hours before being safely rescued by emergency personnel.

“We insist on a comprehensive and transparent investigation to determine those responsible,” stated Rados Zugic, the mayor of Zabljak, on Montenegrin television. He emphasized the importance of safety for tourists, as the municipality’s economy heavily relies on tourism.

A senior official confirmed that the public prosecutor’s office will conduct a comprehensive investigation into the accident. The investigation will focus on determining the mechanical failure that led to the chairs colliding and ultimately, Hertner’s fatal fall.

The tragedy raises serious questions about the safety standards and maintenance procedures of ski lift infrastructure in Montenegro, and the investigation’s findings will be crucial in preventing similar incidents in the future.
