Pantone Declares “Cloud Dancer” as Color of the Year for 2026
A calming, ethereal white hue has been chosen as Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2026, signaling a collective desire for simplicity and mental clarity in an increasingly chaotic world. Dubbed “Cloud Dancer,” the shade represents the 27th selection as the Pantone Color Institute began its annual tradition in 1999.
The selection reflects a cultural shift, according to a statement from Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. “The cacophony that surrounds us has become overwhelming, making it harder to hear the voices of our inner selves,” Eiseman explained. “A conscious statement of simplification, Cloud Dancer enhances our focus, providing release from the distraction of external influences.”
This announcement sparked an unexpected connection for Josh Weber, a partner at Cloud Dancer Studio in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Weber, along with Dustin Larsen and Nick canaday, named their video production company after Cloud dancer Drive, the street where Weber resides. “I think that’s just a fantastic coincidence. It’s lovely. That’s kind of cool. What an odd coincidence that is,” Weber remarked, expressing his amusement at the serendipitous link.
Cloud Dancer Studio’s journey began modestly, offering green screen photography at events like fan Expo, Denver Comic-Con, and Colorado Springs Comic-Con. “We were just a green screen photography booth,” Weber said. “We would go to…set up our green screen photo booth and people would come in, get their photo taken.” The company has sence expanded into short film production, having completed approximately four or five films to date.
Unlike previous Color of the Year selections – such as the warm brown mocha Mousse of last year, or the vibrant Peach Fuzz, Very Peri, and Viva Magenta of recent years – “Cloud Dancer” doesn’t immediately evoke a specific color family. This purposeful ambiguity is intentional, according to Laurie pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute. “Similar to a blank canvas, Cloud Dancer signifies our desire for a fresh start,” Pressman stated. “Peeling away layers of outmoded thinking, we open the door to new approaches. An airy white hue … Cloud dancer opens up space for creativity, allowing our creativity to drift so that new insights and bold ideas can emerge and take shape.”
the influence of the color of the Year extends beyond the design world, with merchandise featuring the “Cloud Dancer” shade – including writing journals, coffee mugs, and even play-Doh – becoming available to consumers. The choice of an airy white hue suggests a broader cultural yearning for peace, focus, and a renewed sense of possibility.
