Urgent Warning: Online Group ‘The Community‘ Exploiting Children Across Ontario
Parents across Ontario are being urged to exercise extreme caution regarding their children’s online activities following reports of widespread child exploitation linked to a systematic online group known as “the Com,” or “The Community.” Durham Police (DRPS) are currently investigating multiple schools in the province, uncovering a disturbing pattern of manipulation, coercion, and threats targeting vulnerable youth.
The investigation, wich began in recent weeks, reveals a complex network exploiting children as young as eight years old through popular online platforms.According to authorities, the group builds trust with victims before escalating to harmful and, in certain specific cases, criminal activity.
How ‘The community’ Operates
Police describe “The Com” as an online group that preys on children through a calculated process of manipulation. Criminals initially establish rapport by feigning friendship or romantic interest, than leverage fear, guilt, and threats to maintain control and secrecy. “We cannot ignore changes in children’s behaviour,” stated a senior law enforcement official.
Victims are pressured into participating in a range of damaging activities, including sharing inappropriate images and videos, self-harm, harming others or animals, adopting unusual usernames or displaying specific symbols, conducting false emergency calls (“swatting”), engaging in online attacks, and disseminating harmful content. Criminals enforce compliance through tactics like revealing private data (“doxing”) and orchestrating swatting incidents.
Platforms Used for exploitation
Law enforcement officials have identified a number of popular platforms being utilized by “The Community” to target children. These include:
- Discord
- Telegram
- Snapchat
- Roblox
- Minecraft
- Twitch
- Steam
Recognizing the Warning Signs
Police are urging parents to be vigilant and aware of potential warning signs indicating their child may be a target. These include:
- Withdrawal from family and friends
- Secretive behavior
- Sudden mood swings
- Declining academic performance
- increased use of encrypted messaging apps
- Excessive cell phone or electronic device usage
- Interest in extreme or harmful online ideologies
Protecting Your Children Online
Authorities recommend a proactive approach to safeguarding children online. Parents are encouraged to:
- Educate children about the risks of sharing personal information or images online.
- Engage in open and non-judgmental conversations about their online activities, including the platforms they use and the people they interact with.
- Secure access to online platforms with appropriate parental controls.
- Regularly review their children’s online activity, paying close attention to platforms with chat or group features.
The Durham Police investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to identify and dismantle “The Community” and bring those responsible to justice. Parents are encouraged to report any suspicious online activity to their local police department.
