The Catalan textile sector faces another setback as Agongym Sportwear, a Reus-based athletic apparel brand, has entered into terminal insolvency proceedings. The Commercial Court of Tarragona has officially declared the company bankrupt, citing a complete lack of assets, according to reports from multiple sources.
The court has given creditors representing at least 5% of the outstanding debt 15 days to propose a single administrator for the process. This development marks a swift downturn for the relatively young company, founded in 2021, which quickly gained traction by marketing functional, comfortable, and versatile sportswear aimed at gym-goers.
Agongym’s rise was fueled by collaborations with athletes and social media influencers, alongside digital marketing campaigns. However, the company’s financial woes appear to have been building for some time, culminating in this formal declaration of bankruptcy. The situation highlights the challenges facing even rapidly growing businesses in a competitive market.
Online forums reveal a growing chorus of complaints from customers regarding poor service, delayed or missing orders, and defective products. Reports detail items arriving with flaws, stains, or damaged printing. Customers also allege unresponsive or automated customer service, further exacerbating dissatisfaction with the brand.
The company’s headquarters are located at Calle Nicaragua número 28 in Reus. Pau Figueras Marqués is identified as the founder, administrator, and sole partner of Agongym Sportwear, holding all positions within the company.
A Wider Trend of Business Failures in Catalonia
Agongym’s collapse is not an isolated incident. Several other businesses in Catalonia have recently faced similar financial difficulties, leading to insolvency proceedings. The Commercial Courts of Catalonia have recorded a number of suspensiones de pagos (payment suspensions) in recent months, according to reports.
Among those recently affected are Hemisferi 1969, a Reus-based advertising agency, with Eduard Cavallé Mariné as its administrator; Okmas Goldtrans, a construction and installation company from Calafell, managed by Natalya Samko; and Quillo Bar, a Barcelona restaurant offering flamenco shows, with Albert Alsina Álvarez as its administrator. The latter is even offering the business for sale as part of the proceedings.
Soldadura y Construcciones Metálicas Gómez, a metalwork and carpentry firm in Barcelona, owned solely by Eduardo Gómez García, and Suministros Fast Barnaservice, a Barcelona-based food product distributor administered by Lourdes Barluenga González del Valle, have also entered insolvency.
Further complicating the situation, the Barcelona court handling the bankruptcy of engineering firm Maswer, based in Abrera, has reopened the insolvency proceedings. This decision stems from outstanding wage and severance payments owed to former employees following a prior workforce adjustment plan. The court-appointed administrator will now certify these debts to facilitate payment through the Fogasa (Fund for Wage Guarantee).

The wave of insolvencies underscores the economic pressures facing businesses in Catalonia, particularly smaller enterprises. The situation raises concerns about potential job losses and the broader impact on the regional economy.
The next step in the Agongym Sportwear case will be the potential appointment of a single administrator, pending a response from creditors representing at least 5% of the company’s liabilities. This administrator will be tasked with managing the insolvency process and attempting to recover assets for distribution to creditors. Further updates on the case are expected in the coming weeks.
What does this mean for consumers with outstanding orders or warranty claims? Unfortunately, the prospects for resolution appear limited given the company’s declared lack of assets. The situation serves as a cautionary tale for both businesses and consumers navigating the current economic climate.
This is a developing story.
