A strong showing against a key rival has solidified Western Michigan University’s position among the nation’s elite college hockey programs. The Broncos maintained their No. 3 ranking in both the USCHO and USA Hockey polls this week, signaling continued success for the Kalamazoo-based team.
Close Competition at the Top
Western Michigan’s performance in a recent home-and-home series against the University of Michigan proved pivotal in maintaining their standing. The team secured one first-place vote in the USCHO rankings, demonstrating respect from pollsters nationwide. The top five teams in both polls remained consistent: Michigan State, Michigan, Western Michigan, Penn State, and Boston University.
The competition is fierce, however. According to reports, only two points separated the Broncos and the Wolverines in the USCHO poll, and the margin was three points in the USA Hockey rankings, highlighting the incredibly tight race for the top spot.
NCHC Representation and Conference Strength
The National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) is well-represented in the national rankings, further demonstrating the league’s strength. Alongside Western Michigan, Denver, North Dakota, Minnesota Duluth, and Colorado College all landed in the top 20.
Notably, Miami, St. Cloud State, Arizona State, and Omaha received votes, meaning all nine teams within the conference are receiving national recognition. This broad representation underscores the competitive depth of the NCHC.
Upcoming Series at St. Cloud State
The Broncos will now turn their attention to the start of conference play, embarking on a road series against St. Cloud State. The first game is scheduled for 8 PM ET on Friday, with a second contest to follow on Saturday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. This series will be a crucial test for Western Michigan as they aim to establish themselves as contenders within the NCHC.
