2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid: Better Value Than Toyota Grand Highlander?

by priyanka.patel tech editor

Three-row family SUVs are designed to excel at space, comfort, and everyday versatility, and the Toyota Grand Highlander has quickly become one of the segment’s strongest benchmarks. It promises generous passenger room, efficient powertrains, and the kind of practicality modern families demand. But in 2026, a familiar rival is quietly outperforming it in the very areas that matter most to buyers looking for maximum value.

The Hyundai Palisade raises the bar by combining upscale interior design with user-friendly technology and a more premium feel at a similar price point. Hyundai has refined the Palisade’s formula to focus on comfort and features, while Toyota continues to emphasize efficiency and reputation. The result is a comparison where the Palisade wins on perceived luxury, standard equipment, and overall cabin experience.

For shoppers choosing between two of the most capable three-row SUVs on the market, this shift is significant. The 2026 Palisade shows that beating a segment leader doesn’t require reinventing the formula, just executing it better where families feel it most.

The new Hyundai Palisade Hybrid offers better value than every before

Cheaper and sleeker than the Grand Highlander

Since it first hit streets back in 2020, the Hyundai Palisade has been one of the best three-row SUVs that money can buy. It generally undercut its core competitors while delivering a more refined experience. The one thing that was missing was a hybrid option. For 2026, Hyundai has finally brought a hybrid variant of the SUV to market, and it easily dominates its segment. It is so good, in fact, that it won the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year Award.

Now we’re not claiming that the Palisade Hybrid is cheap. A starting price of just below $45,000 puts it on the high end for a mainstream vehicle. However, considering the amount of space, tech, and comfort features that you get standard, it is a pretty good deal. It also starts slightly cheaper than some of its most direct rivals, such as the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid.

We think that the SEL Premium offers the best bang-for-your-buck. It feels like an entry-level luxury car rather than a mainstream one, with this particular trim level coming with some nice features without the price inflating by too much. It comes with a heated steering wheel, a 360-degree camera, and heated and ventilated front and second row seats. It is also rated to be more efficient than the two trims above it.

The hybrid powertrain isn’t the only thing new for the 2026 model year. This marks the start of the second generation for the Palisade nameplate. Its wheelbase has been stretched, meaning slightly more space on the inside. It’s styling has also been updated to better align with the rest of the current Hyundai lineup. On the inside, everything generally feels a little more premium than the outgoing model.

Quicker and more efficient than the non-hybrid model

The non-hybrid Palisade carries over its stoic V-6 for the 2026 model year. While there isn’t anything inherently wrong with this setup, it does gulp down fuel. The new hybrid model solves this problem with an efficient powertrain that will save you a decent amount of money on fuel. On top of this, it is actually quite a bit more powerful than the gas-only V-6 model.

The new hybrid Palisade comes equipped with a pretty potent setup. Under the hood you’ll find a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This four-pot pairs with two electric motors which are mounted inside the case of the standard six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard kit, but every model can be upgraded to all-wheel drive.

Putting down an estimated 329 combined horsepower, the standard Palisade Hybrid comes pretty close to the output of the much more expensive optional Hybrid Max powertrain in the Toyota Grand Highlander. It is much quicker off the line than the base Grand Highlander, with a 6.6 second zero to 60 time being more than plenty for a three-row SUV.

The Palisade may not be the sharpest or most engaging car to drive, but it is comfortable. The ride quality here is on par with what you would get from some luxury automakers.

The SEL and SEL Premium trims are considered the Blue models, and are rated to achieve higher levels of efficiency than the rest of the lineup. That being said, 29 to 31 miles per gallon combined is pretty respectable for an SUV this size, much higher than what the average new car manages.

The Grand Highlander with the standard hybrid setup is slightly more efficient, being rated for 36 miles per gallon combined, though it is much less powerful. The Grand Highlander with the more powerful Hybrid Max setup, however, only manages 27 miles per gallon. Thus, the Palisade Hybrid feels pretty competitive.

Hyundai has really found their design niche in the last couple of years. All of their most updated models feel exceptionally unique and are generally more comfortable and more premium than most of their direct rivals. The updated Palisade demonstrates this with a fantastic cabin that feels more luxurious than you might expect.

The Palisade has always been one of the most spacious options in its segment. With the new generation featuring a longer wheelbase, it feels even more cavernous inside. The front two rows are exceptional, with more than enough room to stretch out. The third row is most suitable for kids, but you could fit two adults back there in a pinch. A second row bench is standard, but this can be swapped out for captain’s chairs. There is a good amount of cargo space behind the third row, though you can fold those seats down to get up to 46.3 cubic feet of space.

The Palisade feels neat and retro, finding a good balance between character and comfort. The cabin really does feel like nothing else on the market. Materials used throughout are nice and the build quality is very solid, helping it feel that little bit more plush. There are plenty of upscale features on offer here too, including leather seats, heating for the third row seats, leather upholstery, a dual-panel sunroof, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a UV-C sanitizing tray.

Infotainment and technology

Embedded into the dashboard of every 2026 Palisade Hybrid is a large curved display, combining two 12.3-inch screens. One of these screens acts as the digital gauge display, with the other operating the infotainment system. Standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an on-board Wi-Fi hotspot, in-dash navigation, and Amazon Alexa.

There are a ton of optional tech features that elevate the cabin of the Palisade hybrid even further. This includes things like a fully digital rear-view mirror with Homelink built-in. Also optional is a heads-up display as well as customizable ambient interior lighting, with 64 colors to choose from. Audiophiles will also be interested in the 14-speaker Bose sound system available on top trims.
