With just 17 days remaining in the National Hockey League’s regular season, the race for playoff positioning is intensifying across both conferences. The Tampa Bay Lightning, currently tied in points with the Buffalo Sabres atop the Atlantic Division, are facing a crucial test tonight against a surging Montreal Canadiens team. This contest, and nine others on the schedule, carry significant weight as teams battle for coveted spots in the upcoming Stanley Cup Playoffs. The competition is particularly tight for both divisional titles and the wild card berths, promising a thrilling finish to the season.
The Lightning (42-21-10) have rediscovered their form, earning points in eight consecutive games (6-0-2) and reclaiming first place in the Atlantic. A key contributor to their recent success has been forward Jake Guentzel, who has registered a point in each of his last four games, totaling four goals and four assists, including a goal and two assists in a 3-2 victory over the Nashville Predators on Sunday. However, Tampa Bay is navigating some roster challenges. Star defenseman Victor Hedman is currently away from the team for personal reasons, having missed the last six games, and Nikita Kucherov, battling an illness, is expected to return to the lineup against Montreal after sitting out the previous two contests.
Montreal (42-21-10), riding a five-game winning streak, presents a formidable challenge. A victory tonight would pull the Canadiens within two points of both the Lightning, and Sabres. They are also looking to create some distance between themselves and the Boston Bruins, who trail by just two points in the Atlantic Division and currently hold the first wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Canadiens will be without defenseman Alexandre Carrier, sidelined for two to four weeks with an upper-body injury. Adam Engstrom has been recalled from the Laval Rocket (AHL) and is expected to suit up against Tampa Bay.
A Tight Race in Both Conferences
Beyond the Lightning-Canadiens matchup, several other games have significant playoff implications. In Dallas, the Stars (44-18-12), who have already clinched a playoff berth, will face the Boston Bruins (42-24-8). While Dallas is focused on solidifying their position in the Central Division and closing the eight-point gap behind the Colorado Avalanche for the top spot, Boston is aiming to extend their lead for the final wild card position in the East. The Bruins have been on a roll, winning three straight and five of their last six, including a 4-3 shootout victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday, pushing them four points ahead of Columbus for the final playoff spot.
The Recent York Islanders (42-28-5) suffered a setback on Monday, falling to third in the Metropolitan Division after an 8-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. New York now trails Pittsburgh by one point for second place in the division, with the Penguins holding a game in hand. The Sabres (45-21-8), meanwhile, are tied with Tampa Bay and the Carolina Hurricanes for the top spot in the Eastern Conference and share the lead in the Atlantic Division, four points ahead of Montreal.
Wild Card Battles Heat Up
Further down the Eastern Conference standings, the Ottawa Senators (38-25-10) are attempting to secure a wild card spot, currently sitting two points behind the Blue Jackets. They face the Florida Panthers (38-25-10), who have stumbled recently, losing their last three and six of their last eight games. A Panthers playoff appearance is looking increasingly unlikely, as they trail the closest playoff team by 15 points.
In the Western Conference, the Edmonton Oilers (37-28-9) are four points behind the Anaheim Ducks for the Pacific Division lead and are attempting to close the gap. They’ve won their last three games, fueled by Connor McDavid, who has a point in each of his last four games (five goals, four assists) and leads the NHL with 124 points (42 goals, 82 assists) in 74 games. The Seattle Kraken (32-29-11), however, are faltering, having lost five of their last six, and are now two points behind the Nashville Predators for the second wild card spot, though they have two games in hand.
