Dominican Republic: Drug Prices Stable Despite Middle East Conflict & Inflation

by Grace Chen

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its potential impact on global oil prices have prompted concerns about rising costs for essential goods, including medications. In the Dominican Republic, the pharmaceutical sector is monitoring the situation closely, but currently expresses cautious optimism, anticipating no immediate, uncontrolled price increases. This comes as a relief to a population already navigating economic pressures and seeking affordable healthcare.

Yagreysy Pérez, president of the Dominican Pharmaceutical Association, stated that, “at the moment, we do not anticipate an uncontrolled increase in the prices of medications in the short term.” She echoed recent remarks by President Luis Abinader, emphasizing the importance of calm and trust in the measures being taken by the government to mitigate potential economic fallout. The Dominican Presidency’s official website provides further information on the administration’s economic policies.

Whereas acknowledging the potential for logistical delays, Pérez affirmed that supply chains for medications remain operational. This stability is crucial for ensuring continued access to vital treatments for Dominican citizens. However, the situation remains fluid and ongoing vigilance is necessary.

Avoiding Panic Buying and Ensuring Access

The Dominican Pharmaceutical Association is urging the public to avoid impulsive purchases and unnecessary stockpiling of medications. Pérez warned that such behavior could inadvertently create shortages and fuel anxiety. “Buying more medications than usual or creating home reserves could generate shortages and unnecessary anxiety,” she explained. This message is particularly essential given the current climate of global uncertainty and the tendency towards reactive behavior.

Recent Price Increases in Key Medications

Despite the current assurances, data from the National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumidor) reveals a steady increase in medication prices over the past year. According to Pro Consumidor’s 2024 monitoring reports, a tablet of acetaminophen cost RD$6.96 in 2024, while the syrup version for children was priced at RD$217.66. As of today, that same acetaminophen tablet costs RD$7.65, and the children’s syrup has risen to RD$283.39.

The price increases extend beyond common pain relievers. An asthma inhaler has increased from RD$737.00 to RD$881.40, a difference of RD$144.40 in just over a year. Metformin, a crucial medication for diabetes management, has seen a significant jump from RD$1,098.95 in June 2024 to RD$1,938.30. Omeprazol 20mg has increased by RD$2, now costing RD$27.00 per pill, while cetirizine 10mg has risen to RD$22.95 from RD$20.00. Even common cold syrups, currently in high demand due to the active respiratory virus season, have increased from RD$265.00 in 2024 to RD$279.99.

Government Initiatives to Stabilize Medication Costs

The Program of Essential Medicines and Central Logistics Support (Promese/CAL) is working to maintain a stable medication supply. Officials state that their large-scale acquisition processes prioritize generic medications, allowing them to optimize costs and secure better prices without compromising quality. “Our purchases respond to a structured annual plan, which guarantees foresight, efficiency in supply, and an adequate margin of action to respond to national demand,” they assured.

Currently, Promese/CAL is in the proposal reception phase for the National Public Tender PROMESE/CAL-CCC-LPN-2026-0001, a key process to ensure the supply of medications and medical supplies for the 2026-2027 period. The planning aims to cover health needs from May 2026 to April 2027, demonstrating a proactive approach to long-term medication security.

The Dominican Republic, like many nations, faces the complex challenge of balancing global economic pressures with the need to provide affordable healthcare to its citizens. While the current outlook remains cautiously optimistic, continued monitoring and proactive measures are essential to ensure uninterrupted access to vital medications. The focus on generic alternatives and strategic procurement, as highlighted by Promese/CAL, represents a crucial step in mitigating potential price increases and safeguarding public health.

The next key date to watch is the completion of the proposal review for the PROMESE/CAL-CCC-LPN-2026-0001 tender, expected in early 2026. This will provide a clearer picture of the medication supply landscape for the coming year.
