Toronto FC has made a significant splash in the Major League Soccer offseason, acquiring U.S. International forward Josh Sargent from Norwich City of the English Football League (EFL) Championship. The 26-year-old will join the Canadian club as a Designated Player through the 2030-31 MLS season, a commitment signaling Toronto’s ambition to return to championship contention. The deal, announced today, also involved Toronto FC acquiring St. Louis City SC’s right of first refusal for Sargent in exchange for $500,000 in General Allocation Money – $250,000 in 2026 and $250,000 in 2027 – with the potential for an additional $225,000 based on performance metrics.

The arrival of Sargent represents a pivotal moment for Toronto FC, a club that has been rebuilding since falling short of its previous successes. General Manager Jason Hernandez expressed the club’s excitement, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Josh to Toronto FC as a foundational piece of what we have been building here at the club since last summer.” Hernandez highlighted Sargent’s experience in top leagues, international pedigree, and goal-scoring ability as key attributes that will elevate the team’s attack. “Josh will just begin to enter the prime of his career while representing our club and our city,” Hernandez added.

A Proven Goalscorer Arrives in Toronto

During his five seasons with Norwich City, Sargent established himself as a key player, registering 56 goals and 15 assists in 157 appearances across all competitions. He made his English Premier League debut against Liverpool on August 14, 2021, and quickly made an impact, scoring a memorable scorpion-kick goal against Watford F.C. On January 21, 2022, which was nominated for Premier League Goal of the Month. His contributions were further recognized during the 2024-25 season when he was named to the EFL Championship Team of the Season, recording 20 goal contributions (15 goals and 5 assists) in 32 appearances. He was also voted Norwich City’s Player of the Season by supporters that same year.

Prior to his time in England, Sargent honed his skills in Germany with SV Werder Bremen, where he scored 15 goals and provided nine assists in 83 games. He made a memorable debut with Bremen on December 7, 2018, scoring with his first touch against Fortuna Düsseldorf – the fastest goal scored by a debutant in club history. His journey began in the United States, where he developed through the Scott Gallagher Missouri academy before joining the U-17 U.S. Men’s National Team Residency Program in Bradenton, Florida.

International Experience and Future Ambitions

Sargent brings a wealth of international experience to Toronto FC, having earned 29 caps with the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) and scoring five goals for his country. He was part of the U.S. Squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, featuring in all three group stage matches. He made his senior debut for the USMNT in a friendly against Bolivia on May 28, 2018, becoming the second-youngest player (18 years and 102 days) to score on his debut for the national team.

Despite his international experience, Sargent faces competition for a spot on the 2026 World Cup roster, with other forwards like Folarin Balogun, Haji Wright, Ricardo Pepi, and Patrick Agyemang also vying for positions. However, his move to Toronto FC provides him with a platform to continue developing and showcasing his abilities.

A Vision for the Future

MLSE President & CEO Keith Pelley emphasized the significance of this signing, stating, “Josh Sargent is a world-class player and person, and his addition marks an important step forward in our work to deliver a second MLS Cup championship to our supporters and city.” Pelley acknowledged that this is just one step in a larger process, but underscored the club’s commitment to building a winning team.

Sargent himself expressed his enthusiasm for joining Toronto FC, saying, “I am excited to join Toronto FC and start a new chapter in my life with my family in Toronto.” He added, “From the initial conversations with Toronto FC, what excited me the most about the project was the ambition to be a competitive and winning team. I can’t wait to hit the ground running and play in front of all the fans at BMO Field.”

The acquisition of Josh Sargent is pending a medical examination and the receipt of his work permit and International Transfer Certificate (ITC). Once those formalities are completed, Toronto FC fans will eagerly anticipate seeing their new Designated Player take to the field. The club will be looking to Sargent to provide a consistent goal-scoring threat and lead the attack as they strive to return to the top of the MLS standings.

Toronto FC’s next confirmed action will be the completion of Sargent’s medical and the processing of his ITC, allowing him to officially join the team.
