My Best Friend Is Black Comedy Show Comes to West Loop’s City Winery

by Sofia Alvarez Entertainment Editor

The Chicago comedy troupe My Best Friend Is Black is set to bring its unique brand of humor to City Winery this Tuesday, marking the group’s debut at the West Loop venue. Tickets, starting at $30, are available for purchase on the City Winery website. The performance represents a significant step for the troupe, known for its consistently sold-out shows at Lincoln Lodge in Bucktown, and builds on recent successes including a headline performance at The Last Word Comedy Festival in Virginia this January.

My Best Friend Is Black distinguishes itself through a dynamic, variety-style show that blends stand-up, improv, musical comedy, and interactive games. Member Marcus Banks described the upcoming City Winery performance as a mix of “best of” material and brand modern sketches. The troupe’s ability to seamlessly shift between formats is a key element of its appeal, keeping audiences engaged and anticipating the unexpected.

A Unique Voice in Chicago Comedy

For the City Winery show, the core members of My Best Friend Is Black – Banks, Mike Atcherson, Chloe Mikala, Justin Walker, Rho Hudson, Arlieta Hall, and Daryn Robinson – will accept the stage for a 90-minute program. While the group often collaborates with other local Black talent, this performance will focus on the established chemistry and comedic timing of its central ensemble. This focused approach allows for a tighter, more concentrated showcase of their signature style.

The troupe has garnered critical acclaim, earning “Best Comedy Show” honors from the Chicago Reader for two consecutive years. Their popularity extends beyond awards, with their monthly shows at Lincoln Lodge consistently drawing large crowds. Banks attributes this success to the group’s willingness to take risks and challenge comedic conventions.

From Washington Park to Virginia and Beyond

My Best Friend Is Black’s rise in the Chicago comedy scene began with performances at the Green Line Performing Arts Center in Washington Park in 2023. The troupe’s residency there provided a crucial platform for developing their act and building a dedicated following. However, Banks explained that the residency was temporary, and financial constraints, coupled with the demanding schedule of their Lincoln Lodge performances, made it difficult to maintain a consistent presence on the South Side.

“After that ended, it wasn’t accessible to us anymore and we couldn’t afford to do it,” Banks said. “In addition to that, we were tired. We do shows at Lincoln Lodge every month. Putting together more than one show a month with the type of show that we do would be exhausting.” Despite these challenges, the group remains hopeful about returning to perform in South Side venues in the future.

Sketches That Spark Conversation

The troupe’s comedy often tackles complex themes with a sharp wit and insightful perspective. One popular sketch features Banks as a host presiding over a barbecue where guests debate the revocation of their “Black cards,” culminating in a surprising and often outrageous twist. Another recent bit, inspired by Valentine’s Day, playfully incorporates a dating app, audience participation, and unexpected appearances from historical civil rights leaders.

These sketches, and others like them, demonstrate My Best Friend Is Black’s ability to blend humor with social commentary, creating a space for both laughter, and reflection. The group’s willingness to address sensitive topics with nuance and intelligence has resonated with audiences across the city.

The troupe’s January performance at The Last Word Comedy Festival in Williamsburg, Virginia, marked another milestone, expanding their reach beyond the Midwest. This national exposure is expected to further elevate their profile and attract new fans.

As My Best Friend Is Black prepares for its City Winery debut, the troupe continues to push boundaries and redefine what it means to be a comedy group in Chicago. Fans can expect a night of unpredictable humor, insightful observations, and a celebration of Black creativity.

The next performance for My Best Friend Is Black is scheduled for their regular fourth Thursday of the month engagement at Lincoln Lodge. Further details and ticket information can be found on their social media channels and the Lincoln Lodge website.
