The clues were found within kernel extensions, or kexts, in the macOS 26.3 release. These files identify three unreleased Apple product identifiers: J700, J427, and J527. As previously reported, J700 corresponds to the anticipated low-cost MacBook with the A18 Pro chip. The more intriguing developments center around J427 and J527, suggesting Apple is actively developing at least two new Studio Display configurations. Whereas the specific differences between the models remain unclear, speculation points towards either a larger screen size or a more budget-friendly version with reduced features.
What We Know About the Potential New Displays
This isn’t the first time these model numbers have surfaced. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman referenced J427 and J527 last March, suggesting Apple was evaluating options for a successor to the current Studio Display and potentially a replacement for the higher-end Pro Display XDR. Gurman posited that Apple was developing both models and would choose one for launch, or potentially offer both with differing specifications. Given the Pro Display XDR launched in 2019, a refresh of that model seems increasingly likely.
