Herzog Faces Olympia Uncertainty Amidst Back Pain, Announces Modified Training Plan

A former world champion speed skater is battling worsening back problems as she considers whether to compete in the upcoming Olympia games. Vanessa Herzog is aiming for a single start in the 1,000-meter event, but her participation remains uncertain pending a medical evaluation.

Herzog, 30, revealed a revised training strategy designed to mitigate her discomfort. “I’m going to warm up more intensively, get on the ice straight away and do something fast straight away without a lot of fanfare so that I don’t have to get out of position and get up again,” she stated at a press conference in Milan on Thursday. A final decision regarding her participation will be made on Sunday.

Worsening Back Problems Raise Concerns

The athlete has been grappling with a bulging disc and inflammation of the sacroiliac joint on both sides. Her husband, Thomas Herzog, reported a concerning deterioration in her condition on Wednesday, prompting another medical consultation on Thursday. Herzog recently returned to the ice last Saturday after a three-week hiatus to address these issues.

This isn’t the first time Herzog has faced adversity at the Olympia level, having finished fourth in two previous games. The pressure to perform, coupled with her current physical challenges, adds another layer of complexity to her situation.

Rosner Steps Up, Odor Recovers

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Herzog, Austria will be represented in the women’s 1,000-meter competition. Jeannine Rosner has been added to the field of participants at short notice, marking her Olympia debut. The Tyrolean athlete is scheduled to compete in four events, beginning with the 3,000-meter race on Saturday.

Meanwhile, fellow Austrian speed skater Gabriel Odor is preparing for the 1,000-meter event on Wednesday, though he is still recovering from a recent infection. “I caught an infection last week and delayed it a bit,” Odor said, but expressed confidence in his ability to compete.

The situation highlights the demanding physical toll on athletes competing at the highest level, and the constant need to adapt to unforeseen challenges. The Olympia games are known for their drama, and the story of Herzog’s struggle to compete is already shaping up to be one of the most compelling narratives of the event.
