ITA Airways Airbus A330-900 Returns to Service After Month-Long Grounding

A technical issue and subsequent delays in aircraft deliveries have created operational challenges for ITA Airways, but the airline’s Airbus A330-900, registered as EI-TYG, has returned to service after a month-long grounding. The aircraft resumed operations on Thursday, taking off as AZ620 at 9:39 am from Rome Fiumicino, bound for Los Angeles.
Unexpected Setback Disrupts Operations
The aircraft had been out of service since January 6, 2026, following its return from São Paulo, Brazil. This marked its eighth commercial flight since being delivered on December 31, 2025. Prior to the grounding, the plane had quickly entered service with flights to Rio de Janeiro, a round trip to Malé, and another journey to Rio de Janeiro and back, before its final flight to São Paulo. Upon its return to Rome, “a technical problem” rendered the aircraft unable to restart, resulting in an Aircraft on Ground (AOG) situation.
According to a company release, the assessment and repair process took a full month, exacerbating existing constraints within ITA Airways’ fleet. The limited availability of aircraft forced the airline to continue utilizing its sole remaining A330-200, an aircraft previously slated for retirement after January 1st.
Delivery Delays Compound the Problem
The grounding of EI-TYG coincided with delays in the delivery of additional Airbus A330-900 aircraft. A new aircraft, registered as I-ITYF, was anticipated to arrive before EI-TYG, based on its manufacturer serial number (MSN). However, I-ITYF didn’t appear until July 2025, five months behind schedule.
“This bolt from the blue wasn’t a small problem,” one analyst noted. Currently, three additional A330-900s remain without engines, and their delivery is expected to be delayed by several months, potentially impacting ITA Airways’ summer 2026 operations. These issues are further compounded by regularly scheduled and cyclical maintenance requirements.

The situation highlights the delicate balance airlines must maintain between fleet modernization, maintenance schedules, and unexpected technical challenges. ITA Airways is working to mitigate the impact of these disruptions and ensure continued service for its passengers.
