Neil Young: Music for Greenland, Boycott of Amazon & Trump Protest

Greenland residents will soon have free access to the complete works of neil Young, a gesture of solidarity from the musician following a period of geopolitical tension involving the territory. The 80-year-old singer-songwriter is offering a year’s worth of access to his extensive music and documentary archive to the people of Greenland, a move intended to offer respite amid recent international disputes.

A Sonic Olive Branch to the Arctic

Young’s gift aims to provide a cultural escape for Greenlanders during a time of heightened political scrutiny.

  • On January 23, Young announced the offer via his Neil Young Archives website.
  • The offer is a response to recent diplomatic friction between the US and Greenland.
  • Young has a history of protesting corporate and political stances he disagrees with, including Amazon and Spotify.

“I am offering all of my music to the people of Greenland for free,” wrote in a statement. “It is indeed my sincere wish for you to be able to enjoy all of my music in your stunning Greenland home, in its highest quality. This is an offer of Peace and Love. All the music I have made during the last 62 years is yours to here. You can renew for free as long as you are in Greenland. We do hope other organisations will follow in the spirit of our example. LOVE EARTH.”

The offer comes after a period of diplomatic friction. On January 22,Trump retracted his previous assertions of “right, title and ownership” over Greenland, stating that a “framework of a future deal” had been reached. This followed the withdrawal of threatened tariffs against eight European countries after NATO allies responded to trump’s threats of force by deploying troops to the Arctic island.

A Longstanding Stance Against Corporate Influence

Young’s act of generosity is coupled with his continued criticism of Amazon, citing CEO Jeff Bezos’s support for Trump. In 2024, Amazon donated $1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund. In October, Young announced he would remove his music from Amazon Music, though his CDs and vinyl remain available for purchase.

“Amazon is owned by Jeff Bezos, a billionaire backer of the president,” Young explained. “The president’s international policies and his support of ICE make it unfeasible for me to ignore his actions. If you feel as I do, I strongly recommend that you do not use Amazon. There are many ways to avoid Amazon and support individual Americans and American companies that supply the same products. I have done that with my music and people who are looking can find it in other places.”

Young has a history of taking stands against streaming services. In 2022, he removed his music from Spotify in protest of misinformation spread on Joe Rogan’s podcast. Though, he returned to Spotify in 2024 after Rogan’s podcast became available on other platforms, including Amazon and Apple.

At the time, Young stated his decision was prompted by the spread of disinformation across multiple streaming services, explaining that leaving Spotify, Apple, and Amazon entirely would severely limit access to his music for fans. He noted that pulling his music from Amazon Music was “unfortunately harmful to my record company in the short term but I think the message I am sending is crucial and clear.”

Earlier this month, Young voiced his disapproval of ICE’s actions in Minneapolis, including the fatal shooting of Renee Good, and asserted that “every move [Trump] makes is to build instability so he can stay in power.”

On the Road Again

Young is preparing for a European summer tour, set to begin on June 17 at the Eden Project in Cornwall. He will be supported by Elvis Costello and the Imposters on select dates.
