GLENDALE, Arizona, October 26, 2023 — A seemingly innocuous mosquito bite nearly cost David Hancock his life. The Glendale resident’s ordeal, which began in 2007 with a sudden fever and vomiting, underscores the serious threat posed by mosquito-borne illnesses—a threat that’s growing with a warming planet.
It took doctors 10 agonizing days to diagnose Hancock with West Nile virus. During that time, he slipped into a coma, experienced heart failure, developed fluid in his lungs, and suffered brain inflammation. “I was on the other side, with one foot in the other world,” Hancock recounted to Deutsche Welle, describing the harrowing experience.
What exactly is West Nile virus, and why should we be concerned? While many people infected with West Nile virus experience no symptoms at all, roughly one in five will develop body aches and flu-like discomfort, according to the Cleveland Clinic. However, for others, the consequences can be far more severe.
Each year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that over 1,300 Americans develop severe neurological illness from West Nile virus. Tragically, more than 130 of these cases are fatal. The rise in global temperatures is exacerbating the problem, allowing mosquitoes to expand their range and lengthen their breeding seasons.
This year has already seen concerning surges in West Nile virus cases across the United States. Bell County, Texas, reported six positive tests in just six weeks. A spike in cases in a portion of Utah resulted in one death. Nationally, September saw a 40% increase in reported cases compared to typical levels.
Beyond West Nile, other mosquito-borne diseases—including malaria, dengue fever, and Zika—are also on the rise. This expanding threat demands a multi-pronged approach to prevention and control.
The CDC emphasizes that preventing mosquito bites is the most effective way to protect yourself. Recommendations include using insect repellents registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors, and treating clothing with permethrin. Controlling mosquito breeding grounds around your home is also essential.
Local agencies are actively involved in mosquito control efforts, often through community-wide spraying programs. Some areas are exploring innovative solutions. For example, one Florida county is utilizing X-ray technology to sterilize male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes—a species capable of transmitting dengue and Zika viruses.
Protecting yourself from mosquito bites isn’t just about comfort; it’s about safeguarding your health. Staying informed and taking proactive steps can significantly reduce your risk of contracting these potentially life-threatening diseases.
