Kennedy Center Cancels Jazz Concert Over Trump Name Dispute

A beloved Washington, D.C., tradition has been disrupted: the annual Christmas Eve jazz concert at the Kennedy Center has been canceled. the decision came after musician Chuck Redd, the show’s host for nearly two decades, opted to call off the performance following the White House’s announcement last week that president Trump’s name would be added to the center, renaming it the Trump-Kennedy Center.

Redd, a drummer and vibraphone player who has performed with jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Ray Brown, has led the holiday “Jazz Jams” at the Kennedy Center since 2006, taking over from bassist William “Keter” Betts. “When I saw the name change on the Kennedy Center website and then hours later on the building,I chose to cancel our concert,” Redd told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The center’s website now lists the show as canceled.

What law governs the Kennedy Center’s naming? Congress passed a law in 1963 designating the center as a living memorial to President john F. Kennedy, and that law explicitly prohibits adding any additional memorials to the site.

The White House stated that the president’s handpicked board approved renaming the facility the Trump-Kennedy Center, a move that has sparked critically important backlash from Democratic lawmakers and some scholars who argue it violates the law.The revised name briefly appeared on the building’s facade.

Legal challenges and Presidential Involvement

democratic Rep.Joyce Beatty of Ohio filed a lawsuit Monday, calling the renaming a “flagrant violation of the rule of law” and asserting that a congressional act is required to change the name. Richard Grenell, the center’s president who was appointed by Mr. Trump, has maintained that the center’s status as a memorial to Kennedy remains unchanged.

this isn’t the first instance of artists protesting the former president’s increased involvement with the Kennedy Center. Mr. Trump, a Republican, has taken a more active role with the institution-named for an iconic Democrat-after largely ignoring it during his first term.He has replaced the center’s leadership, reshaped the board, and even personally hosted this year’s Kennedy Center Honors, a departure from the long-standing tradition of presidents primarily attending as spectators.

A Growing List of Cancellations

Since Mr.Trump returned to office, several artists have canceled performances at the Kennedy Center, including Issa Rae, Peter Wolf, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who scrapped a planned production of “Hamilton.” The Christmas Eve jazz concert cancellation adds to this growing list, signaling a continued wave of protest against the management’s actions regarding the cultural landmark.
