Grand View Vikings Claim First NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship in Historic Upset

A stunning victory for Grand View University (Iowa) culminated in their first-ever NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship on Monday, defeating previously undefeated WVU Tech 2-1 in Orange Beach, Alabama. The triumph marks a remarkable turnaround for the Vikings, who were predicted to finish near the bottom of their conference.

The championship run for Grand View was nothing short of extraordinary. Entering the season ranked 13th out of 14 teams in the Heart of America Athletic Conference preseason poll, the Vikings finished with an impressive 18-4-3 record, handing WVU Tech (West Virginia) (20-1-2) their only defeat of the year.

WVU Tech drew first blood, taking an early lead in the fifth minute with a goal from Leny Duperray, assisted by Keishon Clarke. However, Grand View responded swiftly, leveling the score in the 14th minute when Ignacio Gonzalez converted a pass from Payton Chapman, tying the match at 1-1. The first half and much of the second saw both teams battling for control, creating several scoring opportunities but failing to break the deadlock.

The decisive moment arrived in the 59th minute. Herman Furumo capitalized on an opportunity within the penalty area, scoring an unassisted goal to put Grand View ahead 2-1. The Vikings then effectively contained WVU Tech’s offensive efforts, securing the championship victory.

Statistically, Grand View dominated the match, finishing with a 21-6 advantage in total shots and a 10-6 edge in corner kicks. They also generated a 9-6 margin in shots on frame. Goalkeeper Luis Helm was instrumental in the victory, recording five saves and anchoring a defensive line that conceded only one goal throughout the entire postseason, achieving four clean sheets in five matches.

The Vikings’ journey through the national tournament was flawless, boasting a 5-0 record and defeating five ranked opponents, including the top-seeded Bethel (Tenn.). They outscored their postseason competition by a commanding margin of 7-1.

This championship represents the first Red Banner in men’s soccer for Grand View and the 19th overall for the institution. The team’s ascent from underdog status to national champion is a testament to their resilience and determination.
