Miami-Dade Shelter Waives Adoption Fees for Senior Dogs Through YearS End
A heartwarming initiative is underway in Miami-Dade County, offering residents the possibility to provide loving homes to senior dogs at no cost through December 31. The “Seniors Sleigh To” adoption promotion, launched by Miami-Dade Animal Services (MDAS), aims to find forever families for the over 70 dogs aged seven and older currently in their care, as well as those who have been at the shelter for more then six months.
The campaign recognizes the unique qualities of older dogs, highlighting their potential as extraordinary companions. “Senior pets bring unmatched love and companionship, and they often adapt quickly to a new home,” stated a senior official with MDAS. The promotion seeks to counter the common tendency to overlook senior animals in favor of younger pets.
All dogs adopted through the program will be fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped. Adopters will also receive a welcome bundle including a cozy blanket,a toy,and dog treats to help their new companion settle in.
The effort is being conducted in partnership with Best Friends Animal Society, a national animal welfare organization dedicated to achieving a “no-kill” nation for cats and dogs. A “no-kill” designation is defined as a 90% save rate for animals entering a shelter, prioritizing community safety and quality of life. According to Best Friends, senior pets are often “the most overlooked in shelters, yet they can make some of the most loving and easygoing companions.” Many have already lived in homes and may even be house-trained, simplifying the transition to a new family.
MDAS staff and volunteers have spent considerable time getting to know the individual personalities of the senior dogs, allowing them to provide valuable insights to potential adopters and ensure a good match. There is a wide variety of breeds, sizes, and temperaments available, ensuring a senior dog to suit many lifestyles.
