Lebanon is facing a heightened state of alert as Israel conducts a series of aggressive raids on southern Lebanese infrastructure, raising fears of a new phase of conflict following the recent ceasefire in Gaza. The attacks, which began on Saturday, October 11th, targeted civilian and commercial facilities, resulting in casualties and widespread destruction.
Israeli Raids Target civilian infrastructure
Early Saturday, Israeli aircraft launched ten successive raids along the road leading to the town of Al-Musaylih. According to the National News Agency, the strikes focused on six bulldozer and excavator showrooms, causing extensive damage and destroying approximately 300 heavy machinery units. The Lebanese Ministry of Health confirmed the death of one Syrian national and injuries to seven others, including two women.
These actions have prompted strong condemnation from Lebanese officials, who view the raids as a purposeful attempt to undermine the regionS stability. A senior official stated that the attacks represent a “flagrant violation of Resolution 1701 and the arrangements for cessation of hostilities.”
Complaint to the UN Security Council
In response to the escalating violence, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf salam has instructed Foreign Minister Youssef Raji to file an urgent complaint wiht the UN Security Council. the Prime Minister’s Office emphasized that the raids constitute a “direct attack on economic and civilian infrastructure.”
Though, Israel maintains that the targeted sites were being used to rebuild “Hezbollah infrastructure.” The Israeli army released a statement claiming that engineering equipment detected in southern Lebanon had been previously utilized by Hezbollah elements “with the aim of restoring the military infrastructure that he established inside civilian areas in border villages.” They allege that these efforts extend beyond simple home repairs and are a key component of a broader “terrorist system.”
Concerns Over Reconstruction and a Demilitarized Zone
The attacks have ignited concerns that Israel is actively working to prevent the reconstruction of southern Lebanon. Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri noted the raids occurred less than 24 hours after he advocated for a budget allocation for rebuilding destroyed towns in the 2026 budget. “Reconstruction is prohibited, and this is what lies behind the destruction of more than 300 bulldozers,” Berri explained in an interview.
He further argued that Israel’s actions are aimed at establishing a demilitarized buffer zone, rendering the border towns uninhabitable.Berri questioned the credibility of the United States and France, the sponsors of the ceasefire agreement, asking, “Where is the credibility of the United States…while Israel is continuing its violations?”
UNIFIL Incident and Ongoing Violations
Adding to the tensions, a member of the United Nations Interim force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was injured on Saturday after an Israeli drone detonated a bomb near a force site in Kafr Kila. UNIFIL described the incident as “another serious violation of Resolution 1701” and a “worrying disregard for the safety of peacekeepers.”
Israel, however, offered a contrasting narrative, claiming its forces “deported suspects” attempting to rebuild Hezbollah’s military infrastructure by throwing a hand grenade. This incident marks the third of its kind in the past month and a half, raising concerns about a pattern of attacks near UNIFIL sites.
Calls for Diplomatic Intervention
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the Israeli attacks, stating that southern Lebanon “is once again under the fire of blatant Israeli aggression against civilian facilities, without any pretext or pretext.” He also raised the question of compensation for Lebanon, drawing parallels to the situation in Gaza.
The situation remains volatile, with Lebanon continuing to advocate for a diplomatic solution to end the Israeli occupation. A senior Lebanese official reiterated the country’s support for the ceasefire in Gaza and the framework established by the US President Donald Trump. Though, the official emphasized that the ultimate decision rests with Washington, urging the US to exert pressure on Israel to extend the agreement to include southern Lebanon.
